Grand Opening of SayulitAnimals Community Clinic
(Saturday February 28th between 2-6pm)

Sayulitanimals, the local Animal Welfare Organization, is opening the doors of its Full Service Veterinary Clinic.

What started as public presentation on March 18th 2008 of a dream and vision by Tamara Edwards, Sara Briner and Upi Viteri, has finally become a reality. It wasn't easy in times of economical recession to start a charity organization for street animals in a country like Mexico where animal welfare is the least of concerns. But no matter what obstacles arose on the way, Tamara and Sara looked straight ahead and kept on walking, finding solutions and building what they so strongly believe in. "Caring with Compassion for a healthy Community" is their slogan and guideline.

With the "200/50 Club" they found a way of raising accessible funds by looking for 200 people to donate $50 USD which was the money needed to open a full service, self- sustainable veterinary clinic. The clinic is a crucial for the organization to be able to proceed with 2 of their 4 community programs: free spay/neuter for all and medical aid for street animals. Besides facilitating these programs, the clinic will be functioning as a ''normal'' veterinary office where you will get excellent care and products for your pet.

Marco Octavio Alvidrez Garcia is a young vet from and trained in Tepic. He received his experience working in various vet clinics in Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita and Valle Dorado. He is very excited to have joined up with Sayulitanimals.

On Saturday February 28th 2009 the clinic will officially open its doors and everybody is invited to come and enjoy an afternoon getting to know the place and the people involved with Sayulitanimals. The event starts at 2p.m. and ends by 6p.m. at Calle Manuel Plasencia #3 (by the festive salon).

Sayulitanimals, la organización local para el bienestar de los animales, abre sus puertas con un servicio completo de clínica veterinaria.

Lo que empezó con una presentación publica el 18 de marzo de 2008, del sueno y visión de Tamara Edwards, Sara Briner y Upi Viteri, se ha convertido finalmente en una realidad. No fue fácil en tiempos de recesión económica comenzar una organización de caridad para los animales de la calle en un país como México, donde el bienestar de los animales es de mínima importancia. Pero sin importar los obstáculos que se interpusieran en el camino, Tamara, Sara y Upi mantuvieron su visión y siguieron avanzando, encontrando soluciones y construyendo lo que ellas realmente creían. "cuidando con compasión para una comunidad sana" es su frase y su guía de acción.

Con el "Club 200/50" encontraron una forma de reunir dinero , buscando 200 personas que donaran $50.00 dólares, que era el dinero necesario para abrir una clínica de servicio completo, una clínica veterinaria autosuficiente. La clínica es crucial para que la organización pueda comenzar con dos de sus cuatro proyectos comunitarios: esterilización gratuita para todos y ayuda medica para los animales de la calle. Además de facilitar este programa, la clínica estará funcionando como una clínica veterinaria "normal" donde ustedes podrán tener un excelente cuidado y productos para sus mascotas.

El sábado 28 de Febrero de 2009, la clínica abrirá oficialmente sus puertas y todos están invitados a unirse a nuestra celebración, comenzando por la tarde con un recorrido para conocer el lugar y a la gente involucrada con Sayulitanimals. El evento comenzara a las 2 pm y terminara a las 6 pm en Calle Manuel Plasencia #3, a un costado del Salón las Gardenias, de Don Santos Virgen.

The Queen of Sayulita

This past Tuesday, February 24th Sayulita and the rest of Mexico celebrated Flag Day. The students from the local public and private schools participated in the parade that took place around 10am in the morning on Tuesday, and the celebration in the Plaza lasted throughout the day with bands playing music and dancing horses on the streets. The newly crowned "Queen of Sayulita", Ana Esmeralda Hernandez Torres rode on one of the floats in the parade waving at the crowd. There were local ladies serving tacos and ceviche in the plaza all afternoon and many crowds gathered to see the flag ceremony. By late afternoon many of the people moved on to the fair grounds to continue the celebrations into night; and for those of you living vacationing near the ball field, you know the party lasted well until the early morning hours Wednesday.

Este martes pasado, el 24 de Febrero, Sayulita y el resto de México celebro el día de la bandera. Los alumnos de las escuelas privadas y públicas locales participaron en el desfile que empezó a las 10am y la celebración continuo toda la tarde en la plaza con bandas tocando música y caballos bailando en las calles. La Reina de Sayulita 2009, Ana Esmeralda Hernández Torres, quien fue coronada estuvo en uno de los carritos en el desfile saludando a toda la gente. Había Señoras locales sirviendo tacos y ceviche en la plaza durante la tarde y mucha gente se uno en la plaza para ver la ceremonia de la bandera. Para la tarde muchos ya se habían ido a la feria para seguir con las festividades.

2. Birthdate/age: I was born on the 14th of August, 1951. I am 57 years old.

3. Born in Sayulita? If not when did you first come to Sayulita? I was born in Guadalajara, I first started coming to Sayulita in 1988 to buy fruit. I used to come to buy fruit for a restaurant I owned in Guadalajara. It was very common for people to come to Sayulita to buy Mangos. I really liked the town and I came to live here 6 years ago.
3. Nació en Sayulita? Nací en Guadalajara, y la primera vez que llegue a Sayulita fue en 1988 y vine para comprar fruta. Venia para comprar fruta para un restaurante que tenia en Guadalajara. Era muy común que la gente venia a Sayulita para comprar Mangos. Me gustaba mucho el pueblo y vine a vivir aquí hace 6 anos.

4. Education level: I studied law at the University of Guadalajara.
4. Nivel de educación: Estudie derecho en la universidad de Guadalajara.

5. Family history & information: I live in Sayulita alone. I have 12 children from previous marriages and they come to visit sometimes. My father and my grandfather were both jewellers.
5. Vive con su familia? Vivo solo en Sayulita. Tengo 12 hijos de matrimonios previos y mis hijos vienen a visitar a veces. Mi padre y mi abuelo eran joyeros.

6. Employment/business history: After studying law in Guadalajara, I realized it wasn't for me and I didn't want to continue in that field. I decided to become a jeweller like my father and grandfather who both worked in the business and I helped my father for while. I also owned a couple of restaurants in Guadalajara and I've always liked working in the kitchen. When I first came to Sayulita I had a jewelery shop on Calle Revolucion. 6 months ago I opened the restaurant I have here now.
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: Después de estudiar en Guadalajara, me di cuenta que el derecho no era para mi y no querría continuar con esa carrera. Decidí ser un joyero como mi padre y abuelo y empecé a ayudar a mi padre con su negocio. También fui dueño de unos restaurantes en Guadalajara y siempre me ha gustado trabajar en la cocina. Cuando recién llegue a Sayulita abrí una joyería en calle revolución y hace 6 meses abrí el restaurante que tengo ahora.

7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita?. The infrastructure of the town has improved. The new water treatment center has been a positive change in Sayulita and Casa de tercer edad center that they've built at the entrance of town.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? La infraestructura del pueblo ha mejorado. El nuevo tratamiento de agua ha sido un cambio positivo y la casa de tercer edad que construyeron por la entrada del pueblo.

8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita? There has been an increase in drug use and people selling drugs in town and this leads to other problems such as theft and small crimes.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita? Ha habido un aumento en el uso de drogas y mas gente vendiendo drogas y esto causa mas problemas como robos y delincuencias.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? I imagine that Sayulita will become a city eventually and also a very important city in the area. Sayulita has a lot of room to grow, I think even more room to expand than Puerto Vallarta and I believe Sayulita will become an important tourist area known around the world.
9. Como imagina Sayulita en 10 anos? Me imagino que Sayulita será una ciudad algún día y un centro muy importante en el área. Sayulita tiene mucho espacio para crecer, creo que mas espacio que Puerto Vallarta y creo que Sayulita se convertirá en un área turístico y conocido por el mundo.

10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? I would recommend that children are well prepared and educated and that the community offers more sports and activities for the youth of Sayulita to help them stay out of drugs. I believe learning English is also very important for everybody and we will need more language skills as the town grows.
10. Alguna recomanidación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Recomendaria que los ninos sean preparados y educados y que la comunidad ofrezca mas deportes y actividades para los jóvenes de Sayulita para ayudarlos para que no se metan en drogas. Creo que aprender el ingles es muy importantes para todos y necesitamos prepararnos con idiomas ya que el pueblo se esta creciendo.
