Our wonderful webmaster Ian Hodge has passed his weekly introductory torch to moi, Andrea Villarrubia, for the sweet, slow summer months.  So as I carry the fire through the rain, your loyal readership (self included) shall await your triumphant return Sr. Hodge.  ¡Hasta Pronto!

It's been another gorgeous and sunny week in our lovely Sayulita.  The ocean has been calm and glassy most of the week, with a little swell finally rolling in just in time for the weekend.  We're continuing to see a little pickup in tourism with a nice level of energy and activity on the streets and beaches, as we also settle into that tranquilo vibe that we all love so much about summer, even when it means tightening the belts a little.  NBA Playoffs have provided a great excuse for folks to get out and take in the game at local bars and restaurants, and Sayulita Fish Taco's Thursday Night 2x1 Happy Hour is always a great way to kick off your summer weekend.  

Any of you that have driven downtown in the last two days no doubt noticed the huge wooden stage being constructed in front of the plaza on the corner in front of Calypso and Cruz's Mi Tiendita.  The stage is set for a celebration in honor of all the Mothers of Sayulita.  The festivities kick off tomorrow, Saturday June 6, at 4:00 PM, followed by a sit-down dinner for 700 mothers!  Avenida Revolucion, the main street into town, will be closed to traffic from noon on Saturday.  The festivities will include live music from Sayulita's own banda, Bahia Sayulita, as well as Mariachis and the traditional folkloric dancers from the Damian Carmona Primary School, followed by a huge raffle of great prizes!  Students from the Secondary School will help to serve dinner to the deserving Mamas.  Normally the celebration is held in May, to coincide with Mother's Day on May 10; but with the schools closed due to the Swine Flu scare, a decision was made to postpone the celebration a few weeks.  The Municipal authorities - Lic. Paniagua, our Regidor Rodrigo Pena, and our Judge Noe Plascencia - along with Luis Verdin, asked all sectors of our community to come together and organize an event for all Mothers in Sayulita.  So come on out and support your local Mamas, because Mothering is Cool! (A special thanks to Gina Portillo for providing el Sayulero with info on this wonderful event, and for her tireless help in organizing). 

This week's Sayulero brings you an interview with Rick from Iguana Oasis, a look at the NBA Playoffs as seen from Sayulita, and an article about Sayulita's Recycling Program - from its grass-roots origins looking foward to the next steps needed to keep recycling alive and well in our growing community.

NBA Final Frenzy in Sayulita!

For restaurants in Sayulita nothing helps business more than an exciting sports final to increase revenue. Last Sunday in the Mexican National Soccer Finals the Pumas won a tight game in a 3-2 decision in overtime against Pachuca. Now it is the time for the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals. This year's final puts the Orlando Magic against repeating champions the Los Angeles Lakers in a best-of-seven series.

For a lot of businesses in Sayulita, sports finals can mean big crowds. Unfortunately, that all depends on the language spoken by most fans. Among many fans, Judy Billington of Pacifica who is an avid Orlando Magic fan adores the Spanish language yet simply wants to watch her team in English.

Many establishments have the capability of changing the language of sports commentating; including Don Pedro's, Los Afortunados and Calypso's. According to Jorge Anguiano, the bartender and Tomas Martinez the waiter, they are expecting 30- 40 people to come watch the NBA finals on their big screen TV this week. Even Jaime Canales the chef was incredibly optimistic and looked forward to serving great dishes throughout the series without compromise.

The series is scheduled for the best-of-seven games. After the loss of the Orlando Magic in Game one on Thursday, Game two will be held at Los Angeles on Sunday at 6pm Sayulita time. Game three will be at Orlando on Tuesday June 7 at 7pm, Game four will be at Orlando at 7pm Sayulita time with games five, six and seven following as necessary. 

 
Gran frenesí por final de la NBA

Para los negocios en Sayulita nada ayuda más que una gran y excitante final deportiva para incrementar los ingresos. El pasado domingo en la final del futbol nacional los Pumas ganaron en un apretado partido contra el Pachuca 3-2. Ahora es tiempo para la final de la NBA o Liga Nacional de Básquet Bol. Este año la final puso a Orlando Magic contra los repetidos campeones Los Lakers de Los Ángeles en lo mejor de siete series.

Para muchos negocios en Sayulita, las finales deportivas pueden atraer grandes masas, desgraciadamente todo depende del lenguaje de la mayoría de los fanáticos. Entre muchos fanáticos, Judy Billington, de Pacifica, quien es una gran admiradora de Orlando Magic le gusta mucho el español y simplemente quiere ver a su equipo ingles.

Muchos establecimientos tienen la capacidad de cambiar el lenguaje de la transmisión, incluyendo los restaurantes Don Pedro's, Los Afortunados y Calypso el cual se localiza frente a la plaza principal. De acuerdo a Jorge Anguiano, el bartender y Tomas Martínez, mesero, están esperando que de 30 a 40 personas vengan a ver la final de la NBA en su pantalla gigante esta semana. Incluso Jaime Canales, el chef, se mostró increíblemente optimista y espera servir grandiosas comidas durante las series sin ningún compromiso.

Las series están programadas para lo mejor en siete partidos. Después de que los Magicos perdieran el primer partido, el juego numero dos será jugado en Los Ángeles el domingo a las 6 pm, horario de Sayulita. El juego numero tres será jugado en Orlando el martes 7 a las 7 pm y cuarto juego será también en Orlando el jueves 11 de junio a las 7 pm también, con los juegos cinco, seis y siete pendientes si son necesarios.

Change of the Guard for Sayulita Recycling

"It's time for the town of Sayulita to take over the local recycling program", said Tracie Willis, who launched Sayulita Recicla two years ago. "They need to take it over for the respect and love of their pueblo," Willis told El Sayulero this week, adding that it is crucial that the service continue. However, "it has reached a point where the town must take it over to keep it going."

Two years ago, Willis, owner of popular local restaurant Chocobanana, began a recycling program because she believed not having one was embarrassing for tourism, especially in this day and age. She rightly points out that, "tourists will not come to a dirty town."

A committee was therefore formed under the umbrella of Grupo Pro Sayulita, a progressive organization supporting local humanitarian, social and health projects. GPS now supports and helps fund local recycling with a team of volunteers led by Willis.  The program has been a great success, and with the upcoming rollout of 10 more containers, there will be a total of 62 recycling receptacles around Sayulita.

"We cannot make it any easier for people," Willis said, adding that it's a free service unlike in many communities throughout the world where citizens must pay to recycle. It's not a money-making operation, but rather is run on a very small budget with the help of volunteers. The program includes daily pick up of plastic bottles, clear glass, clear plastic bags, cardboard and aluminum cans. These are emptied out at a local depot location owned by Santos Vergin.  

A Nayarit company is involved in the shipping of the recyclables so that they stay in Mexico, Willis explained. Many Sayulita residents agree the program makes a positive difference in the community. "Tracie is a take charge kind of lady, so seeing her spearhead the campaign makes total sense," said Dan Brown, who recently returned to Vancouver (Canada) after five months here. "The world is fast embracing recycling. Sayulita has a very large tourist base and recycling is what tourists are used to seeing in most of their home towns."

He added human beings require oxygen to live, which means ensuring nature survives so that humans can survive. "With that in mind, recycling is not an option, it is mandatory," Brown said. Molly Higgins, who runs a jewelry store and hostel here, said having recycling in Sayulita shows visitors that local people care about this community.
"We come from places where it [recycling] is just a way of life," said Higgins, the mother of two boys - Quitzma, 4, and Paxkal, 1. "It helps turn people's focus back to nature."

In Mexico alone, 90,000 tons of waste are produced each day, and every local program reducing that amount helps. "It's been a success - the schools are now recycling," Willis said. She also said that while it's been a rewarding experience getting the program off the ground, she's ready for a break and to hand the program over to locals who care about the program enough to ensure that it continues.

This sweet little male kitty is about one month old. It got droped of with its identical twin brother by local kids at the door of the Sayulitanimals Clinic. They are both healthy and been treated for parasites. Is anybody interested in adopting one or even both of them? When they are old enough, Sayulitanimals will neuter them for free.

3.    Born in Sayulita? No, I was actually born in Toronto, Canada although many times I feel like I was born here.

4.    Family History and Information? I am an only child and unfortunately both my parents are deceased. My parents were avid nature lovers and I feel that rubbed off on me. I started collecting exotic animals as well as training exotic birds at a very young age. This is something that has stuck with me to this day.

5.    Education Level? I graduated high school in Toronto, Canada and felt that there were more roads in life to explore than a simple education at a University. At the age of 15 I became an apprentice to an executive chef in the city of Toronto named Andy Simcott who trained me and I eventually worked my way up to sous chef at age 17.

6.    Business History? I have always had both a passion for cooking and exotic animals, so when I left Toronto I worked for various cruise lines, private schools and numerous catering jobs where I met a lot of interesting people from various cultures. I eventually decided to take a little vacation to Puerto Vallarta in 2006 with a friend, looking to possibly open a restaurant there when my friend and I decided to take a day trip to Sayulita.

7.    What made you want to open a business in Sayulita?  When I first arrived in Sayulita by bus I had no plan on a restaurant or any type of business here, until I eventually came across the Iguana Refuge located on Calle Marlin and Manuel Navarrete. It was truly love at first sight! At the time there was a restaurant already operating that a father had given to his son.  In the back area it was empty and they showed movies. I simply, on the spur of the moment, asked if it was available. He said yes and I felt that my two true passions were beginning to become a reality at that point. Now I am sole owner/ caretaker of Iguana Azul. Sometimes I wonder who are my biggest customers, the 40 or so Iguanas or the people. I do my best to take care of them all. 
7. Que hizo que decidieras abrir un negocio en Sayulita? Cuando recién llegue a Sayulita por autobús, yo no tenía ningún plan de un restaurante o cualquier otro tipo de negocio aquí, hasta que pase por el Refugio de la Iguana en la calle Marlin y Manuel Navarrete. Realmente fue amor a primera vista! En ese tiempo ya había un restaurante operando aquí, que un padre le heredo a su hijo. El patio estaba vacío y ellos exhibían películas. Yo simplemente, sin pensarlo un momento, pregunte si estaba disponible. El me dijo que si y pensé que mis dos verdaderas pasiones estaban a punto de convertirse en realidad en ese momento. Ahora soy único dueño/cuidador del Iguana Azul. Algunas veces me pregunto quienes son mis mas grandes clientes, las casi 40 iguanas o la gente. Yo hago lo mejor que puedo para cuidarlos a todos. 

8.    What is your favorite food to prepare in Sayulita? I personally have to say that health food has become one of my favorite types of food to prepare. From my handmade soy burger to over a dozen health drinks. I use a secret ingredient that I cannot disclose, but I have to admit a few visitors were let in on the secret.   
8.  ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita en Sayulita? Yo personalmente tengo que decir que la comida saludable se ha convertido en uno de mis tipos favoritos de comida. Yo cocino hamburguesas de soya y casi una docena de bebidas saludables. Uso un ingrediente secreto que no puedo revelar pero que tengo que admitir que se lo he dado a conocer a algunos visitantes.

9.    What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? During my time here in Sayulita I have made a lot of good friends both locally and nationally. I really like the easy way about people here and the low stress that comes with this village. I really enjoy when locals and visitors come to the restaurant to eat and see the iguanas. Around 2:30 every afternoon, I welcome people to come and hand feed them. One child from Guadalajara recently told me that it was the highlight of his vacation. That will stick with me forever.
9. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas sobre Sayulita? Durante mi estadía en Sayulita he hecho muchos buenos amigos locales y nacionales. Realmente me gusta la manera en que la gente es aquí y el muy poco estrés que existe en este pueblo. Disfruto mucho cuando los locales y visitantes vienen a mi restaurante a comer y a ver las iguanas. Más o menos a las 2;30 todas las tardes recibo gente para que alimente a las iguanas. Un niño de Guadalajara me dijo recientemente que eso fue lo mejor de sus vacaciones. Eso se va a quedar en mí para siempre. 

10.    Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? I just really hope to keep doing what I am doing now-owning and running a successful restaurant with a very special attraction for the public. I hope the iguanas will be preserved in this location much longer than that even if I am not.  
10. Donde te ves a ti mismo en 10 años? Realmente espero que todavía este haciendo lo mismo que hago ahora. Tener y atender un exitoso restaurante con una atracción muy especial para el público. Espero que las iguanas serán conservadas en esta localidad mucho mas tiempo que el que yo este aquí. 

11.    One improvement you would like to see in Sayulita in the future? I would really like to see more after school programs for the kids of Sayulita. I think that there is enough local and outside talent that with a little effort, this could become a reality

12.    What would you like to say to the first time visitor of Sayulita? I simply want to say that there is more than just the beach, surfing and fishing here. It is a magical village where sometimes you just need to read between the lines. The Iguana Refuge is open to the public during business hours and everyone is welcome to come, feed and take pictures of these exotic creatures.
12. ¿Qué le gustaría decir al pueblo de Sayulita? simplemente quiero decir que hay mas que solo playas, surf y pesca aquí. Es un pueblo mágico donde algunas veces tienes que  leer entre líneas.
