The lack of our formal introduction for Andrea caused a bit of confusion after our last issue. Our apologies to all of our faithful readers. Andrea (a dear friend and Sayulita resident) has generously volunteered to write the opening intro every week. As most of you probably noticed, Andrea's writing is far superior to mine and I feel very fortunate to be able to include her creativity and knowledge of Sayulita in our newsletter on a weekly basis. However, let me assure all of you that I will still be editing and publishing El Sayulero each and every week as well as responding to all of your questions/comments/concerns. La falta de nuestra presentación oficial de Andrea causado un poco de confusión después de nuestra última edición. Nuestras disculpas a todos nuestros fieles lectores. Remember, you can read all past interviews and Sayulita News articles on the SayulitaLife.com News page | As we wrap up another beautiful week in sunny Sayulita, we're starting to feel the temperature and the humidity creeping up a bit. The last few afternoons and evenings have brought in some serious cloud-cover and with it the tease of much-needed rain, but it looks like we and our thirsty plants will have to wait a bit longer for relief. Word on the waves is that a sweet swell is rolling in this weekend, so cancel your appointments, wax up your boards, and as the Surfistas say, "surfsipuedes."
Work continues on the North-end road paving project, resulting in various road closures and presenting challenges to residents and tourists needing to drive to homes or jobs on that side of town. The projected completion date for the paving of Avenida Palmar is July 30. Workers are moving as quickly as they can to make progress and open up passageways for walking and smaller vehicles, and everyone's patience is much appreciated. In the meantime, take advantage of the opportunity to stroll along the beach and take in the beauty of our Sayulita Bay.
This week's El Sayulero brings you an interview with OM Yoga's owner/instructor, Jill Sawchuck; a sneak-peek at a new DVD featuring photos of Sayulita and her community; a re-cap of the Mothers' Celebration held last Saturday; and a look at how great weather affects every aspect of Sayulita Life.

On Saturday June 6th, more than a thousand people came together to celebrate and thank Sayulita's mothers. Festivities began at four in the afternoon and lasted well into the night. The master of ceremonies was Maestro Raul, a gentleman who has come to Sayulita to teach music and other arts at the Centro Cultural.
Among the groups that performed for the mothers was the newly created "Banda Sayulita". This band, made up of some of Sayulita's finest young men, delighted the crowds with its enthusiastic performance. Under the direction of Maestra Manuela, children from Damian Carmona School offered folkloric dances.
Other stellar performances were given by Victor Lopez and "Nancy" from Restaurante la Fiesta.
The youngest performer of the night was six-year-old Isabella McCormick, or Chabelita as some of her Sayulita friends like to call her. Chabelita chose to sing the theme song from the movie "Little Mermaid". The crowd fell silent as Chabelita sang "a cappella". She ended her performance singing in Spanish, one stanza of "Cielito Lindo", in perfect Spanish.
During the show, dinner was served to approximately 800 mothers. In the later part of the evening a raffle took place. Many mothers went home with wonderful prizes including a television, refrigerator, microwave, fans, and many other lovely gifts.
Rodrigo Peña, Noé Plasencia, Luis Verdín and Maestro Raul worked tirelessly to make the evening perfect for the mothers. Rodrigo Peña's daughter, Breida, organized the raffle. Maria del Rosario I. along with many other volunteers helped with the organization of this fiesta. The women from "La Casa de la Tercera Edad" made vases and flowers to decorate the table. Bonnie Metzger's art students made wonderful candleholders from recyclable materials. Mike Beck and Janet Anderson along with Marta Alvarez, and many children, helped to decorate the enormous table.
It was considered by all to be a huge success. We hope this event will become a Sayulita tradition.

El Sabado 6 de junio, mas de mil personas se unieron para celebrar y dar las gracias a las mamas de Sayulita. La fiesta empezo a las cuatro de la tarde y duro hasta la media noche. El maestro de ceremonias fue el Maestro Raul, un caballero que ha llegado a Sayulita a dar clases de musica en la Casa de la Cultura. Entre los grupos musicales se presento la nueva "Banda Sayaulita". Esta banda esta compuesta por unos de los jovenes mas talentosos de la zona. Su show estuvo lleno de entusiasmo y alegria. Ninos de la escuela Damian Carmona, bajo la direccion de la Maestra Manuela, ofrecieron un baile folklorico. Las voces de Victor Lopez y Nancy, del Restaurante "La Fiesta" entonaron canciones favoritas de toda la comunidad. La cantante mas joven de la noche fue Isabella McCormick, que tiene solo seis anos de edad. Sus amigos de Sayulita le han dado el nombre de "Chabelita". Chabelita escogio el tema de "La Pequena Sirenita", la cual canto a cappella. Termino su actuacion con una estrofa de "Cielito Lindo".
Durante el show se sirvieron mas de 800 cenas a las madres reunidas en la plaza. Mas tarde se organizo una rifa. Muchas madres llevaron a casa bonitos premios incluyendo, refrigeradores, televisores, microondas, y muchos mas.

La hija de Rodrigo Pena, Breida, estuvo a cargo de la rifa, Maria del Rosario Iglesias con muchas otras voluntarias, ayudaron a organizar la noche. Las mujeres de la "Casa de la Tercera Edad", hicieron floreros y flores para decorar la enorme mesa. Los estudiantes de arte de Bonnie Metzger hicieron candelabros de materials reciclables. Marta Alvarez con su grupo de voluntarias, Mike Beck, y Janet Anderson, y muchos ninos, ayudaron a decorar la mesa. Este evento tan importante para nuestra comunidad, fue considerado un gran exito. Heart of Sayulita is a new collection of photographs on DVD snapped by well-known photographer and part-time resident Cynthia Gillespie-Smith that stunningly capture local people, animals, and landscapes. Most of the photographs included in the DVD were taken between January and March of this year.
"I photographed most early mornings and late afternoons, when the extraordinary light is at its very best," explains Gillespie-Smith, adding that the fact that her subjects were so willing made the experience "a photographer's dream." Cynthia Gillespie-Smith studied photography at Cal State Hayward, and spent time in Africa working for voluntary organizations and USAID.
Over her 30-year career, Gillespie-Smith has done stints as a photojournalist and worked for The National Geographic Society. She moved to France 20 years ago and founded French Foto Tours. She also organized photographic workshops in Europe and Mexico; a move which eventually led her to Sayulita. Cynthia Gillespie-Smith first visited here 12 years ago, when Sayulita was a tiny fishing village with a spark that moved her. "I've been inspired by the natural beauty and amazing activity here," she explained. "Every place I look I see a picture!" After a flurry of shooting this year, Gillespie-Smith chose 200 photographs that show the village in a positive way.
The images are truly the heart of Sayulita; featuring shots of a local couple on their wedding day, a surfer catching an awesome wave, and a tiny dog held in the palm of a hand. Each is a colourful, vibrant work of art. "I love hearing people say, 'Wow, where is that?' At the same time I wanted to give something back to this community I love so much," she said. To that end, all net proceeds from sales of the DVD will be donated to the public primary school and SayulitAnimals, a local organization protecting the welfare of dogs and cats.
The Heart of Sayulita is also available online for $20 USD at www.heartofsayulita.com, where one can view some of the images and order the DVD or individual photographs. Beginning this November, Heart of Sayulita will be available at selected locations here in town, including Rollies, Don Pedros and Las Hamacas. "The Heart of Sayulita is a perfect way to show people what a stunning location we have," Gillespie-Smith said.

El Sayulero recently met with the mayor of Sayulita Noé Plasencia about the current plans for Sayulita this summer. Mr. Plasencia and community leaders including Rodrigo Peña have just recently opened up the local community center for creative new programs.
The community center is located on the corner of Manuel Navarrete and Calle Gaviota, and contains a small outdoor amphitheater and lawn area, as well as formal classrooms. Currently Bonnie Metzger teaches an Art Program for Primary School aged youth there on Thursday afternoons.
The potential new programs could be anything that teaches a particular skill, trade or art. Some suggestions proposed included a music center, yoga studio, martial arts instruction, dog obedience program, etc. If you are interested in starting a program at the center please write up a basic plan describing the program, suggested days and times, as well as who it will cater to.

El Sayulero se entrevisto recientemente con el juez Noé Plasencia a cerca de los planes para este verano. El Sr. Plasencia y los líderes de la comunidad incluyendo a Rodrigo Peña, han abierto recientemente el centro comunitario para impartir nuevos y creativos programas.
El centro comunitario se localiza en la esquina de Manuel Navarrete y Calle Gaviota y cuenta en su interior con un anfiteatro, una area abierta asi como algunos salones. Actualmente Bonnie Metzger enseña en el Programa de Arte para estudiantes de la Primaria, los jueves por las tardes.
El probable nuevo programa puede ser cualquier cosa que enseñe algún talento en especial, habilidad o arte. With temperatures hovering at a relaxing 80 degrees more or less these days, visitors and businesses alike are more than happy to be by the beach in Sayulita. We caught up with some of visitors and locals who are enjoying the current climate.
For surfers Rodrigo Del Paso and Andrés Aguilar, together with sunbathers Monica Ugalde, Mariana Bailin, Romina Tello and Sofia Ordaz-all vacationing together from Queretaro, Mexico-the waves and people-watching make Sayulita their destination of choice.
For Jorge Siorda, the bartender/ manager of La Playa bar, there has been a recent decline in North American visitors but a huge increase in Mexican Nationals, as well as an increase in requests for frozen concoctions at his beachfront business. Jorge plans on keeping his bar open all summer long.
El Sayulero also caught up with newlyweds Luis and Claudia Gutierrez-Marquez who traveled all the way from the capital city of Tepic just to relax and soak up the sun. They felt that, even if it was just for the afternoon, Sayulita is the perfect spot to celebrate their new life together.
Con temperaturas entre los 25-28 grados en estos días, tanto visitantes como negocios están más que felices de estar en las playas de Sayulita. After meeting my husband Daniel, a professional musician, we decided to move to Guadalajara and from there we traveled frequently back and forth throughout various parts of India studying Yoga and the arts.

7. What exactly is yoga in your opinion? I feel it is an ancient science that follows a universal path. This path can take anyone who practices it to a healthier life and happier state of mind and thus improving their quality of living. We use various methods of stretching and movement, together with awareness of breathing and body techniques. This releases the bad energy out of us and replenishes ourselves with more self-knowledge and a relaxed, positive outlook.
7. Que es exactamente Yoga, en tu opinión? Creo que es una ciencia ancestral que sigue el camino universal. Este camino puede llevar a cualquiera que lo practique a lograr una vida más sana y un estado mental más feliz y esto nos lleva a mejorar nuestra calidad de vida. Nosotros usamos varios métodos de estiramientos, movimientos, junto con técnicas de conciencia de la propia respiración y cuerpo. Esto libera la mala energía fuera de nosotros y nos completa con mas auto conocimiento y un punto de vista mas positivo y relajado.
8. Who do you tend to have as your students? Everyone who wants to come is always welcome here. Anyone can practice Yoga and in fact it is a common misconception that it is only for fit, flexible women. On the contrary, I welcome and encourage anyone to try it since Yoga adapts to you, not vice-versa. It is such a vast science and always changing so that you can take it anywhere you go and the airlines won't even charge you for an extra bag.
8. Como haces para reclutar estudiantes? Cualquiera que quiera es siempre bienvenido aquí. Cualquier persona puede practicar yoga y de hecho es un error muy común pensar que solo las mujeres delgadas y flexibles pueden practicarlo. Por el contrario, me gusta recibir y animar a todos a que traten, porque el yoga se adapta a ti, no vice-versa. Es una ciencia tan vasta y siempre cambiando que la puedes llevar a donde sea que vayas y las aerolíneas no te van a cobrar por equipaje extra.
9. In your 6 years in Sayulita, what changes have you really noticed? I've noticed we now have more variety of comfort foods such as broccoli and red bell peppers. Sayulita also has a bigger and more diverse variety of restaurants and services to choose from. More community-oriented programs like recycling and the animal programs, I think are really catching on.
9. En tus seis años en Sayulita, ¿Qué cambios has notado realmente? He notado que ahora tenemos una variedad de alimentos como brócoli y pimientos rojos. Sayulita también tiene una mas grande y diversa cantidad de restaurantes y servicios para escoger. La comunidad esta mas orientada a programas como reciclaje, y los programas para animales, creo que se están poniendo de moda.
10. What are your favorite things to do in your free-time? Surfing and enjoying the beach with my husband and kids are a highlight. I feel that as the kids get older, we all have more freedom to travel and be adventurous although not necessarily reckless.
10. Cuales son las cosas que mas disfrutas hacer durante tu tiempo libre? Surfear y disfrutar la playa con mi esposo y mis hijos es lo que mas me gusta. Siento que conforme los niños van creciendo, todos tenemos mas libertad de viajar y ser aventureros aunque no necesariamente temerarios.
11. Speaking of reckless adventures, is there one in particular you would like to share with the readers of El Sayulero? After meeting my husband Daniel one day outside of Chiapas, Mexico, 3 of our friends and I were driving along when suddenly we lost control of the car and flipped over, down a hill about 30 meters to the bottom. During that whole time when the car kept rolling over, I asked myself if I was happy. That is what went through my mind at that very moment. When we ended up on the bottom of the hill and upside down we all looked around and no one was injured, aside from a twisted ankle. As everyone was gathering up our belongings, I climbed the hill and at that very moment our friends who happened to be ahead of us before the accident had doubled back and saw just me standing there and looked shocked and horrified. When everyone else made their way up the hill, we piled in our friends car and we all headed back to our hotel in Chiapas. When we got to the pool we jumped in and I kept thinking how lucky I was and we all began living differently, with the exception of one of us.
11. Hablando de aventuras temerarias, hay alguna en particular que te gustaría compartir con los lectores de El Sayulero? Después de conocer a mi esposo Daniel, un día afuera de Chiapas, México, tres de nuestros amigos y yo estábamos manejando cuando de repente perdimos el control del carro y dimos volteretas abajo en la colina a unos treinta metros del fondo. Durante todo el tiempo cuando el carro estaba dando vueltas me preguntaba a mi misma si era feliz. Eso fue lo que pasó por mi mente en ese momento. Cuando terminamos en el fondo del barranco, boca abajo, todos volteamos alrededor y nadie estaba herido, aparte de un tobillo torcido. Cuando todos estábamos buscando nuestras pertenencias, escalé la colina y en ese preciso momento uno de nuestros amigos que estaba adelante de nosotros en el momento del accidente se regresó y me vio allí parada, conmocionada y asustada. Cuando todos llegaron a la cima de la colina, pusimos nuestras cosas en el carro de nuestro amigo y nos regresamos a nuestro hotel en Chiapas. Cuando fuimos a la piscina todos nos metimos en ella y yo no dejaba de pensar lo suertuda que era, todos comenzamos a vivir diferentes vidas, con la excepción de uno de nosotros.
