Construction has been completed on the new, privately funded section of
Avenida Palmar for a few weeks now. The paved section of the road, which starts just past the elementary school, promises to be a great improvement for the north end of town - that is, once the rains stop filling it up with mud runoff from the many unpaved side streets. Speaking of construction... there has been a lot of recent activity excavating the huge lot at the main turnoff from highway 200 into Sayulita. What does the future hold for this spot? Stay tuned to El Sayulero for more info in the coming weeks.
On Monday the 24th, Sayulita's students will head back to classes, so here's wishing them all a great last weekend of summer! This week, summer has me loving: a lakeside getaway; perfectly ripe mangoes; and Lucha Libre!

| Sayulita Beach Clean-Up a Sparkling Success  Sayulita's shoreline clean-up on August 15th was a fantastic team effort that left our pueblo a cleaner, prouder place. Local residents andOdyssea Diving owners Luis Fernando Garcia Paris (Polo) and Ana Maria Vega organized the event and arranged to loan diving equipment to anyone who participated. Last Saturday morning, the call for volunteers was answered. Nearly 100 people turned out to help; 30 of whom were divers and snorklers, and the rest worked to pick up garbage on shore. The clean-up even attracted outside attention: aside from El Sayulero, a television crew from Tepic also covered the event.
 Divers and other volunteers loaded gear into six local fishing boats whose owners had offered their services free of charge. Crews spent the morning taking divers out and hauling garbage back to the beach for disposal. By morning's end, more than 20 large sacks of garbage had been removed from the shoreline. Among the items retrieved were fiber glass, boat parts, plenty of plastic containers, and old fishing nets.
It was heartwarming to see the excitement and cooperation as locals and visitors worked together to beautify Sayulita's main attraction. "I live in Sayulita and I pick up trash on a daily basis," said Eugenie Russell, who participated as a diver but works as a sailing instructor. Resident Octavia Jolley, who owns the Break Fast Café, also dove last weekend. "I want to support the local community," she said, also mentioning that garbage under the water like old nets and fishing lines can harm marine life.
 Volunteers also came from outside Sayulita to participate. Dave Murray, from La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, for example teamed up with 10-year-old Felipe Ruvalcaba and Rob Crossill from Bucerias, who had read about the event in El Sayulero last week and wanted to help. "At the end of the day it is important that we keep the ocean clean," said Crossill.
 After the clean-up, local businesses provided food, drinks, and prizes to acknowledge the volunteers. The real reward, however, came from transforming the beach into a cleaner, safer place for swimmers, surfers, and fishermen. "We cleaned all the front of Sayulita from [Los] Muertos to Malpasos," Ana Maria Vega said proudly, adding that she and Polo were thrilled by the large turnout and commitment of the volunteers. They express their sincere thanks to everyone who helped Odyssea Diving make the day a success. The pair also said, as a reminder to residents and visitors,"Do not throw garbage; everything has its own place to be." They hope to hold a second clean up in October.
Limpieza de playa de Sayulita un éxito rotundo  La limpieza de la costa de Sayulita realizada el dia 15 de agosto fue un fantastico esfuerzo de equipo que hizo de nuestro pueblo un lugar mas limpio y digno de orgullo. Residentes locales asi como los duenos deOdyssea Diving, Luis Fernando Garcia Paris (Polo) y Ana Maria Vega, organizaron el evento y arreglaron el prestamo del equipo de buceo a todo aquel que participo. El pasado sabado por la manana fue respondido el llamado que se hizo buscando voluntarios: cerca de 100 personas se dieron cita para ayudar, 30 buzos y el resto trabajo recogiendo basura en la orilla de la playa. La limpieza atrajo la atencion del exterior, ya que ademas de El Sayulero, un equipo de television de Tepic cubrio este evento.
 Los buzos y otros voluntarios cargaron el equipo en seis botes de pesca locales- los dueños de dichos botes ofrecieron sus servicios gratis. Los tripulantes pasaron la manana sacando a los buzos del agua y transportando la basura a la playa. Para el final de la manana, mas de 20 sacos grandes de basura habian sido sacados del mar. Entra las cosas recogidas: fibra de vidrio, partes de botes, muchos envases de plastico y viejas redes para pescar.
 Fue alentador ver el entusiasmo y cooperacion de locales y visitantes que trabajaron juntos para enbellecer la principal atraccion de Sayulita. "Yo vivo en Sayulita y levanto basura regularmente", dice Eugenie Russell, quien participo como buzo. Ella es instructora de navegacion. La residente Octavia Jolley, duena del Break Fast Cafe tambien buceo el pasado fin de semana. "quiero ayudar a la comunidad local" dijo, agregando que la basura bajo el agua, como las viejas redes e hilos de pesca pueden danar la vida marina.
Ademas, hubo voluntarios que vinieron de otras partes para ayudar, como Dave Murray, de La Cruz de Huanacaxtle quien hizo equipo junto con Felipe Ruvalcaba de 10 anos de edad y con Rob Crossill de Bucerias, quien leyo acerca del evento en El Sayulero y quiso ayudar. "Al final del dia es importante que mantengamos limpio el mar" dijo Crossill.
 Despues de la limpieza, negocios locales ofrecieron comida, bebidas y premios para reconocer la labor de los voluntarios, aunque la verdadera recompensa vino de transformar la playa en un lugar mas limpio y seguro para nadadores, surfistas y pescadores. "Limpiamos todo el frente de Sayulita desde Los Muertos hasta Malpasos", Vega dijo orgullosa, agregando que ella y Polo estuvieron muy contentos con la gran asistencia y compromiso de los voluntarios. Ellos expresaron sus mas sinceros agradecimientos a todo aquel que ayudo a Odyssea Diving y convirtieron el dia en un exito. La pareja pidió a los residentes y visitantes "No tirar basura: cada cosa tiene su lugar". Ellos esperan tener otra reunion en octubre.

With all of the power shortages in the off-season, it seems like there isn't anyone in charge of general power in the village of Sayulita. The reality is the power is controlled by the government agency called CFE or Comision Federal de Electricidad. According to CFE management, Sayulita happens to be placed on the same power "grid" as other neighboring communities, including Puerto Vallarta.
In the past few years during the rainy season, from May until November, blackouts occur frequently due to rainstorms, other factors, and the fact that Puerto Vallarta "needed" existing power more during certain times of the day and especially during the evening hours. These factors can eliminate power for hours in the village of Sayulita and even with the growth that Sayulita has experienced, the village still remains a low priority.
The reality is that late August is that time every two months when residents and people who have electrical hookups need to pay, regardless of past inconveniences. In a country well-known for its "mañana" syndrome, or "it can wait" philosophy, some people who find that they are even a day late with their payment can and most likely will have their power cut off. If this happens you need to visit the main office in Bucerias and wait. Once you wait in line and your bill has been paid it can take up to 3 working days to reconnect your power.
According to Saul Cruz, the friendly manager of the internet shop located across from the Libreria on Calle Miramar on the north end of the village, to pay for your CFE bill you can pay only before the due date at his internet shop and If for some reason you don't have your bill, Saul may have a copy for you.
Apagones vs. Cortes
Con toda la falta de electricidad en la temporada baja, pareciera que no hay nadie a cargo de la electricidad en general en el pueblo de Sayulita. La realidad es que la electricidad esta controlada por la agencia de gobierno llamada Comisión Federal de Electricidad o CFE. De acuerdo al encargado de la CFE, Sayulita esta conectado a la misma fuente de poder a la que otras comunidades vecinas también están conectadas, incluyendo Puerto Vallarta.
En los años pasados, durante la temporada de lluvias, de mayo a noviembre, los apagones ocurren frecuentemente debido a las tormentas y otros factores tales como la "necesidad" existente de más poder para Puerto Vallarta durante ciertos momentos del día, especialmente durante las horas de la tarde. Estos factores pueden cortar la electricidad por horas en el pueblo de Sayulita y aun con el crecimiento que ha experimentado Sayulita, el pueblo sigue como baja prioridad.
La realidad es que es el tiempo del bimestre, en la segunda mitad de agosto y cada dos meses, cuando todos los residentes y la gente que tiene contratos de electricidad, tienen que pagar a pesar de los inconvenientes. En un país bien conocido por su filosofía del "mañana", o "eso puede esperar", las personas que se retrasaron al menos un día en su pago de electricidad pueden y tendrán cortes en el servicio. Si esto pasa entonces tiene que visitar la oficina principal en Bucerías y esperar. Una vez que espera en la línea y paga su recibo, puede tomarle hasta tres días hábiles para tener electricidad de vuelta en casa.
De acuerdo a Saúl Cruz, el amistoso encargado del negocio de Internet, frente a la librería en la calle Miramar en el lado norte del pueblo, para poder pagar su recibo de electricidad allí, es necesario que lo pague antes de la fecha limite y si por alguna razón no tiene usted su recibo, Saúl puede que tenga una copia del mismo, para usted.

3. Born in Sayulita? No, I was actually born in San Mateo, California, just outside of San Francisco.

4. Family History and Information? I was raised just outside Bellingham, Washington on a small farm. I have my mother Christie and my father Colonel Sr. I also have two brothers, Colonel who is married and has two boys and Dallas who is married. My family still lives in the general area of Washington where I grew up. I live full time in Sayulita with my partner Marcelo and my one and a half year old daughter Sofia Luna.

5. Education Level and Future Academic Goals? During high school, I was given the chance to be an exchange student in Denmark for a year. After graduating from high school in Washington, I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington in International Studies and Danish, Go Huskies! I eventually received my Masters Degree from the Institute of Trans-Personal Psychology in Palo Alto in Trans-Personal Psychology.

6. Business History? My very first job as a teenager was picking raspberries in Washington. After college I decided to join the Peace Corps and worked with the Huli tribe in the highlands of Papua, New Guinea. There I taught women how to cook and sew, as well as taught anti-violence classes for the tribe. After the Peace Corps I moved to North Carolina and worked for the State Correctional Facilities as a Social Therapist helping men, women and youth. One day I visited a local bookstore while working in North Carolina and was sold on Sayulita after one sentence in a guide book on Mexico. I visited Sayulita a few times and after 10 years working in North Carolina, I decided to drop everything and move to Sayulita full time in 2004. While living in Sayulita, I have written a few children's book, a novel and I am currently working on a non fiction book. It is a self help book which, in a nutshell, tells us how to live from our hearts.
6. ¿Historia de trabajo? Mi primer trabajo fue como adolescente, recogiendo frambuesas en Washington. Después de graduarme decidí unirme a Peace Corps y trabaje en la tribu Huli en las montañas de Papua, Nueva Guinea. Allí enseñé a las mujeres como cocinar y coser, también enseñé clases de anti-violencia a la tribu. Después de Peace Corps me mude a Carolina del Norte y trabaje para la Correccional del Estado como Terapeuta Social, ayudando a los hombres, mujeres y jóvenes. Un día visite una librería local cuando trabajaba en Carolina del Norte y Sayulita me compro después de un solo enunciado en una guía turística de México. Visite Sayulita unas cuantas veces y después de 10 años trabajando en Carolina del Norte, decidí dejar todo mudarme a Sayulita de tiempo completo en 2004. Viviendo en Sayulita he escrito unos cuantos libros infantiles, una novela, y actualmente estoy trabajando en un libro de no-ficción. Es un libro de autoayuda, el cual en unas cuantas palabras nos dice como vivir con el corazón.
7. What are some future projects you have planned? With my current non-fiction book, I have a literary agent in New York who seems very interested in it. I also have a retreat that I am organizing for November 1st. The retreat is a week long and is for anyone interested in body, mind and heart. 8. Is there anything you would change in Sayulita? I have noticed that in any small town, Sayulita being no exception, there tends to be a lot of gossip which leads to negativity. I would like to see people try and focus on the positive things around them instead of the negative.
8. ¿Hay algo que te gustaria cambiar en Sayulita? He notado que en cualquier pueblo pequeño, Sayulita no es la excepción, hay tendencia a montones de chismorreo lo cual conduce a negatividad. 9. Is there something you would like to tell the youth of Sayulita? I would just like to say that to get what you want is not always easy and easy is not always right. Realize that there are different ways to achieve your goals and hard work combined with creativity are two of the best. Look at everyone as if they were your family and before doing something questionable, ask yourself if my family would approve.
9. ¿Hay algo que te gustaria decirles a los jovenes de Sayulita? Solo me gustaría decirles que obtener lo que quieren algunas veces no es tan sencillo y fácil no siempre es lo correcto. Dense cuenta de que hay diferentes maneras de lograr sus metas y el trabajo duro, combinado con la creatividad son dos de las mejores maneras. Vean a todos como si fueran su familia y antes de hacer algo cuestionable, pregúntense a ustedes mismos si su familia lo aprobaría.
10. Can you tell our readers a favorite story of yours? One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, My son, the battle is between two wolves inside of us all". "One wolf is darkness, envy, jealousy, greed and resentment. The other wolf is lightness, joy, pride, peace, serenity and truth". The grandson thought about it for a minute and asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee sat back and simply said, "The one you feed."
