Sayulita Garbage and Recycling

As the population in Sayulita grows, the need for services grows as well; specifically garbage collection. The town of Sayulita is very proud of their proactive garbage collection service as well as the new recycling efforts.

Sayulita offers free garbage collection in major neighborhoods every day except Sunday and holidays. Outlying areas are served according to a predetermined schedule.  Listen for the garbage collection bell.  In the mornings the garbage collectors pass through the Sayulita neighborhoods ringing their bell. When the bell rings everybody in town understand that now it is time to  place the garbage in the street for collection. With this system, garbage is not left out on the street at any hour and dogs are not able to destroy the bags looking for food. The garbage truck usually begins collection at six in the morning and finishes at two in the afternoon.

A problem arose as more and more Sayulita vacation homes were built in locations difficult for the garbage truck to access. Thanks to the hard work of Grupo Pro Sayulita and the generous donations of the Sayulita Community, Sayulita now has a new smaller truck that can access these difficult to reach areas.  The smaller trucks works together with the large truck to eventually collect all of the garbage in Sayulita and transport it to the dump in Bucerias.

Another option for disposing of usable waste is an independent truck collector that purchases scrap material including: aluminum, copper, pieces of iron, bronze, old coins, cars radiator or old batteries, etc.  This truck pays for re-usable material by the kilo. The truck passes through Sayulita everyday playing an announcement through a microphone offering to buy material and usable waste. This material is then re-used.

Sayulita is now very proud to be offering recycling. Again, thanks to the hard work of Grupo Pro Sayulita and the initiative of ‘Sayulimpia’; foreigners and locals living in Sayulita are working together to recycle plastic and cardboard. Recycling cans have been placed throughout Sayulita that are labeled for plastic recycling. Recycling cans can be found in the town square, in front of Chocho Banana, and in front of the baseball field. Several businesses now have recycling cans as well.

The Sayulimpia team and the community of Sayulita continues to work on the Sayulita recycling efforts and the Sayulita Garbage service by resolving problems and finding  new and better solutions.

El Sayulero interview: Jesus "Piolin" Rodriguez (Town sheriff, judge, gas and fish man!)

1. Name:Jesús “Piolín” Rodríguez Ahumada 2. Year born: February 10, 1961 3. Year arriving to Sayulita? I was born in Higuera Blanca, but I have lived in Sayulita all my life. 4. Married/Family?I live with my wife of 14 years, Laura Elena Sandoval Castillion.  Currently we do not have children. 5. Employment/Occupation history: I have had a lot of jobs in my life! When I was 18, I went to the USA but I didn´t really care for the “always working” lifestyle there. I only lasted about eight months and then I came back to Mexico because my boss was not going to give me Semana Santa off! I then returned to Mexico and began working in the mines in Cuale, Jalisco. Soon I worked my way into management and became a manager of over 200 people and 68 trucks. I also worked in La Paz, Baja California as a fisherman and commercial diver. Since 1989 I have worked in the fish brokering business. As most of you know, I am also working the job of Sayulita Delegate (town judge) for the last two years.  This job only pays a token salary though and my income all comes from the fish store.

6. One positive change you have observed Sayulita: The recent changes in Sayulita can almost be viewed as gifts from God.  All the development that has occurred in our village didn´t  really happen in other towns like Lo de Marcos or La Peñita.  We had much stronger and better  growth here in Sayulita. The type of employment offered has been a great change. Before tourist arrival, the town used to earn a living collecting coconuts and limes. We used to sell them by the kilo and barely make enough to eat. Today in Sayulita, we all have much better jobs; including those who come from outside the area looking for work.

7. One negative change you have observed Sayulita: I have to admit that growth here has been very disorganized. Nobody expected for Sayulita to grow this big in such a short amount of time. As our village grows so do the problems.  The worst of which are vandalism, petty theft, and traffic. However, we are working hard to resolve these problems. A lot of people come to me with a variety of problems. My position and the work involved has not been easy, but I have learned to manage my time much better.  

8. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? I imagine a bigger Sayulita, but unless something is done, we will have much larger problems with water, drainage, and electricity.  There is currently a lot of demand on Sayulita and little in the way of people willing to help the town with their own actions.

9. A recommendation or comment for the people of Sayulita: I think we have to start to work together to make sure our village works for us! This includes all Sayulita residents; foreigners and locals alike!

During Sayulita Days, all sporting events have been suspended to leave the baseball field open for the Sayulita Carnival.

The Sayulita Days Carnival is already underway in the baseball field and it is full of great entertainment, rides and games.

Basura en Sayulita

Con el crecimiento de la población, la basura también ha aumentado. ¿Cómo funciona actualmente la recolección de basura en Sayulita? Cuando suena la campana… todos saben que tienen que sacar la basura. Por la mañana, el camión recolector suele pasar unos minutos antes de recoger la basura haciendo sonar una campana. Así la gente evita sacar las bolsas a cualquier hora y los perros no las destruyen buscando comida. Usualmente, el camión empieza la recolección desde las 6 de la mañana y termina a las 2 de la tarde, excepto los domingos y feriados.

Actualmente hay un camión nuevo más pequeño que ayuda al más grande con la basura en algunas zonas del pueblo. Luego el camión más grande lleva todo lo recolectado hasta Bucerías.

En Sayulita, también existe otro camión, aunque no depende del gobierno, que pasa todos los días y paga por kilo si tienes: aluminio, cobre, fierros viejos, bronce, monedas, baterías, radiadores de carro que ya no sirvan. Lo puedes escuchar desde tu casa. ¡Es un carro de sonido!

Actualmente, con la inicitiva de Tracie llamada “Sayulimpia”, con la ayuda de gente como Don Santos, ambos, extranjeros y locales que viven en Sayulita, están trabajando juntos para empezar a reciclar el plástico y el cartón. También se pidió apoyo al gobierno para mejorar la recolección de basura. En el pueblo ya puedes encontrar diferentes botes para clasificar la basura, por ejemplo, el de “solamente plástico”. Unos están ubicados en la plaza del centro, otros cruzando el río, frente al campo de baseball. Y mucha gente del pueblo comenzó a ayudar también. El grupo de Sayulimpia se está juntando, al menos, una vez por semana para resolver problemas y encontrar nuevas soluciones. Y ya encontraron un lugar apropiado para el trabajo de reciclaje en las afueras del pueblo.   

Todo esto es nuevo en Sayulita y no es fácil. Todos tenemos que aprender cómo reciclar y la importancia de hacerlo. Es un proceso que empieza en la propia casa, en la calle, adentro y afuera, con la conciencia de cada uno de nosotros.

1. Nombre del entrevistado:Jesús Rodríguez Ahumada, lo conocen popularmente como “Piolín” 2. Año de nacimiento/Edad:  Nacido el  10 de Febrero de 1961. 3. ¿Nació en Sayulita?/¿En qué año llegó a Sayulita? Nací en Higuera Blanca, pero toda mi vida viví en Sayulita. 4. ¿Vive con su familia? ¿Cuántos son? Vivo con mi esposa Laura Elena Sandoval Castillon por 14 anos,… No tenemos hijos. 5. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: Corrí en todos los empleos. A los 18 años me fui a Estados Unidos, pero no me gustó nada. Acá respetamos la semana santa, por flojos, allá nada. Volví para acá y me fui a Cuale a trabajar en las minas. Rápidamente me nombraron jefe de concentrados y minerales, tenía a cargo a 200 personas y 68 camiones de volteo. También trabajé en La Paz, Baja California, en la pesca y el buceo. Desde el año 1989, trabajé en Sayulita, con mi hermano, en la pesca. Actualmente ya no trabajamos juntos. Llevo 2 años y 2 meses como delegado. A diferencia de otros, vivo de mi pescadería y no de la política, mi función como delegado es para ayudar al pueblo y no para hacer negocio.

6. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita:  Lo que sucedió en Sayulita es una bendición de dios.  Todo el desarrollo que se ha dado aquí no ocurrió en otros pueblos, como Lo de Marcos o  

7. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita: Hay que admitir que aquí el desarrollo fue desordenado, nadie estaba preparado para esto. Crece el pueblo y crecen los problemas: vandalismo, robos, transito y demás. Pero estamos trabajando duro para resolverlos. Aquí llegan con todo tipo de problemas. No es fácil, pero aprendí a manejarlos.

8. ¿Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Me imagino a Sayulita más grande, pero con más problemas: el agua, el drenaje, la electricidad… Aquí la gente exige, no pide por favor. El pueblo no estaba preparado para tantos. A veces me parece como un caballo que se desboca…      

9. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita: Creo que tenemos que empezar a caminar juntos para que funcione, todos, extranjeros y locales.

Deportes en Sayulita

En estos días los juegos deportivos están suspendidos…
Los días de Sayulita ya comenzaron. ¡El campo de baseball está abierto y lleno de juegos! Y ya puedes sacar tus boletos para el gran show en la Plaza de Toros, para el 23 y 24 de Febrero:

- pre-venta $150 (en La Cubeta y en la lavandería de Higuera Blanca)
- en taquilla $200 (en la Plaza de Toros)

      El programa, para el Sábado 23 incluye: a los reyes de la tecnobanda, a Ciclón del Pacífico y su grupo, 15 montas con los mejores toros, Hernán Romero y Carlos Chavez con el toro siete veces campeón, y jinetes con espuelas de oro.
Y para el Domingo 24: veinte montas, la banda Zagal, Joaquín Tello con sus caballos de alta escuela.
