Sayulita Art Walk: A Night of Art, Community & Magic on Calle Zarquito

Sayulita’s beloved Art Walk returns this December, bringing color, music, creativity, and community together on the enchanting Calle Zarquito. What began years ago as a small gathering of neighbors painting murals and rocks with local kids has grown into one of Sayulita’s most inspiring cultural events — completely free, volunteer-run, and fueled by a shared passion for art and togetherness.

We sat down with the organizer to learn more about the story behind the event, the mission, the challenges, and what magic awaits us at this December’s edition.

The Inspiration Behind the Art Walk

The roots of the Art Walk go back to a simple idea: bring neighbors together and brighten the callejón. The first event was intimate — just a handful of locals creating small murals and activities for kids. Over time, that spark evolved, and in 2024 it returned as a public art celebration now welcoming hundreds of attendees.

Today, the mission remains beautifully clear:

To create a free, inclusive space in Sayulita to experience and exhibit art of all kinds — a space where locals, expats, and visitors can come together in community and feel inspired.

The energy of the Art Walk is unmistakable. A charming street transforms into an open-air gallery under the stars, with murals, installations, music, dance, and creativity in every corner. From Batala drum performances to Aztec dancers and spontaneous jam sessions, the vibe is pure Sayulita magic.

A Platform for Artists, Performers, & Creatives

Each Art Walk brings together around:

  • 35 artists
  • 2–4 muralists
  • 3–4 performance groups

It’s a space where emerging artists can show their work for the first time and see the community react with wonder and encouragement. Experienced artists take risks, exhibit new pieces, and connect with other creatives they might never meet otherwise.

People often describe the event as feeling like “Old Sayulita” — a heartfelt compliment that reflects the event’s spirit of community, creativity, and connection.

Behind the Scenes: 100% Volunteer-Run

Although the Art Walk feels effortless and magical, it’s built entirely by volunteers — dancers, musicians, muralists, organizers, bartenders — many of whom are professionals donating their work out of love for Sayulita.

The biggest challenges?
Funding and logistics.

Costs include:

  • Stage setup
  • Lighting
  • Paint + wall prep for murals
  • Printing
  • Bar supplies
  • A pipa truck to clean the street
  • Equipment for performances and workshops

This December, donations and bar sales will help cover these essential expenses.

And yes — there are very cool surprises on the way, including a new art installation at Casa Yaka. Follow the signs up the hill… and have your camera ready!
