Well, Sayulita received the first rain of the year last week. Though it came a bit earlier than usual, the precipitation was a welcomed by local residents as a layer of built up dust washed away. The crabs are coming out, the plants are starting grow, and the village has a new "fresher" feeling. Summer!

2. Birthdate/age: June 07, 1976. I am almost 32 years old.

3. Born in Sayulita? No, I was born in Puerto Vallarta but my grandfather lived here in Sayulita so I spent a great many of my childhood days here in Sayulita. I sort of grew up in both PV and Sayulita. I moved here permanently in 1999.
3. Nació en Sayulita? No, yo nací en Puerto Vallarta pero mi abuelo vivía aquí en Sayulita, así que pase muchos de mis días felices de la infancia aquí en Sayulita. Yo diría que crecí en ambos: Puerto Vallarta y Sayulita. Me mude para acá permanentemente en 1999.
4. Education level: I went to the public school in Puerto Vallarta for elementary education. For junior and senior high school, I went to the private American School which is also located in Puerto Vallarta. After high school, I went to UAG (University Autonoma Guadalajara) in Guadalajara where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Touristic Business Management in 1998.

La secundaria y la preparatoria las estudie en la escuela privada la American School que también esta en Puerto Vallarta. Después de la preparatoria fui a la UAG (Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara) en Guadalajara donde me gradué con el titulo de Manejo de Negocios Turísticos en 1998.
5. Family history & information? I live here in Sayulita with my fiancée Summer (36), and my children Nainoa (2 ½) and Kekoa (4 months). Yes, I am very busy all the time!
My grandfather, Rogelio Ramos Diaz, moved here in the 1930's from Chacala, Jalisco (on the south end of the Puerto Vallarta Bay, not the Chacala that is 45 minutes north of here.) He came to work on the original Hacienda picking up the cocos de aceite (small coconuts used to make coco oil.) He was also a fisherman and a small-time carpenter. when he moved here the original town/community of Sayulita used to be located in Patzcuaro, about 5 miles south of town. My dad was the oldest son and remembers going to work with my grandfather and traveling as far as Burros in Punta de Mita with donkeys to collect the cocos.
My grandfather went on to become one of the original founders of the Sayulita Ejido. Actually, he used to own all of the land from the river mouth, all the way to Los Muertos beach. Even though he gave a lot of the land away to family and sold some to others, my family still owns a lot of his original holdings. I am even a co-owner of the house right in Sayulita (next to Sayulita Espresso) where my grandfather lived.
My dad wanted a bit more out of life than to just work here in Sayulita. After completing the 3rd grade for the third time (that's as high as the grade school went to back then) he continued his education in PV, Tepic, and then to the University in Guadalajara where he graduated with a degree in public accounting. He worked as a public accountant and auditor for bankS, gasoline stations, and other big businesses. He is now retired.
5. Vive con su familia? Cuántos son? Vivo en Sayulita con mi novia Summer (36) y mis hijas Nainoa (2 ½) y Kekoa (4 meses). Si, estoy muy ocupado todo el tiempo!
Mi abuelo, Rogelio Ramos Díaz, se mudo de Chacala, Jalisco (al sur de la bahía de Puerto Vallarta, no Chacala la que esta a 45 minutos al norte de aquí) a Sayulita en los 30's. El vino a trabajar en la Hacienda, recogiendo cocos de aceite (pequeños cocos usados para hacer aceite de coco). Además, el era pescador y carpintero. El poblado original de Sayulita solía estar en Patzcuaro, como a 5 kilómetros al sur del pueblo, cuando el se mudo aquí. Mi papa es el hijo mayor y recuerda ir a trabajar con mi abuelo y viajar hasta Los Burros en Punta de Mita para recoger los cocos en burros.
Mi abuelo se convirtió en uno de los fundadores originales del ejido de Sayulita. En realidad, el era el dueño de toda la tierra desde la boca del río hasta la playa de los Muertos. Aun cuando el cedió la tierra a la familia y vendió alguna a otros, mi familia aun tiene un lote original de mi abuelo. Yo incluso soy co-propietario de la casa en Sayulita (enseguida del Espresso en Sayulita) donde vivía mi abuelo.
Mi papa quería un poco mas de la vida que solo trabajar aquí en Sayulita. Después de que completo el 3er. grado por tercera vez (eso era el máximo grado de estudios en aquella época) el continuo su educación en Puerto Vallarta, Tepic, y luego en la Universidad de Guadalajara donde se graduó con el titulo de Contador Publico. El trabajo como contador publico y auditor de banco, estaciones de gasolina y otros negocios grandes. El ahora esta retirado.
6. Employment/buiness history: My first job here in Sayulita was working in the Calypso bar as a bartender and cashier. I also made extra money working as a fisherman. I started using my degree and helping local businesses as a consultant. I helped set up a few restaurants in town including Tigre's Seafood. It was very fun helping people. Soon after, I started repairing dings (cracks) in surfboards. That eventually lead to a full scale surfboard repair AND fabrication shop where we fix over 1,000 surfboards every year and create another 60-70 brand new surfboards from blanks.
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: mi primer trabajo fue trabajando en el bar Calypso como bartender y cajero. Incluso hacia dinero extra trabajando como pescador. Empecé a usar mi titulo y a ayudar a negocios locales como consultor. Ayude a establecer unos cuantos restaurantes en el pueblo, incluyendo Mariscos El Tigre. Era muy divertido ayudar a la gente. Poco después, empecé a reparar grietas (agujeros) en las tablas de surf. Eso finalmente me llevo a trabajar a gran escala en la tienda de reparación y fabricación de tablas para surf, donde arreglamos alrededor de 1000 tablas cada año y creamos unas 60 a 70 tablas nuevas
7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? There are much more services and utilities here than ever before. We can now use cell phones, the water is more consistent, there are less power outages, the trash is collected all the time, and we even have our own police force.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? Hay mucho más servicios y facilidades aquí que nunca antes. Ahora podemos usar teléfonos celulares, el agua es mas consistente, hay menos apagones eléctricos, la basura se recolecta todo el tiempo, e incluso tenemos nuestra propia estación de policía.
8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. Crowds. I know you have to accept the bad with the good but Sayulita is undergoing a demographic explosion. More people means more traffic, more dust, more people in the surf break, and less green areas. Crowded areas also tend to lead to a faster pace of life as well as one that is more expensive. It is unbelievable what it costs to eat a meal in a restaurant here in Sayulita.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita? Multitudes. Yo se que tenemos que aceptar lo malo que viene con lo bueno, pero Sayulita esta sufriendo una explosión demográfica. Mucha gente significa más tráfico, más polvo, mas gente surfista y menos áreas verdes. Áreas atestadas incluso tienden a acelerar la vida así como también a hacerla mas cara. Es increíble lo que cuesta comer una comida en un restaurante aquí en Sayulita.
9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? It will be even bigger and more crowded. However, the growth is starting to be controlled and that is a good thing. For example, it is now much harder and more expensive to get building permits. The cost of living in Sayulita may start to drive out the locals, especially those that are not living from the tourist dollar. Rents will get higher and so will other products including food.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Será mucho mas grande y mas poblada. Como sea, el crecimiento esta empezando a ser controlado y eso es algo bueno. Por ejemplo, ahora es más difícil y más caro obtener permisos para construir. El costo de vida en Sayulita puede empezar a alejar a los (residentes) locales, especialmente los que no están viviendo del dólar turista. Las rentas serán mas altas así como otros productos, incluyendo la comida.
10 Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? Yes I do. Take care of what you have. I am not referring to anything in particular but I can give examples. Take care of your town, take care of your family, take care of your friends and neighbors. Don't forget to help others if you have the opportunity. We all live in a karmic world so make sure you are not just looking straight ahead. Look around! We all live in a great place and need to go to the extra effort EVERY DAY to keep our town special. Help preserve our environment. Go plant a tree!
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Si, cuiden lo que tienen. No me estoy refiriendo a nada en particular pero puedo dar ejemplos. Cuiden su pueblo, cuiden su familia, cuiden a sus amigos y a sus vecinos. No se olviden de ayudar a otros si tienen la oportunidad de hacerlo. Todos vivimos en un mundo kármico así que asegúrense de que no están mirando solo lo de enfrente. Miren alrededor! Todos vivimos en un gran lugar y necesitamos hacer un esfuerzo extra TODOS LOS DÍAS para mantener nuestro pueblo como un pueblo especial. Ayuden a preservar el ambiente. Planten un árbol!
