1. Nombre del entrevistado:  Gina Portillo

2.  Birthdate/age: November 21st, 1948
2. Año de nacimiento/Edad: 21 de noviembre, 1948

3.  Born in Sayulita?  I was born in Mexico City. My father was a physician. We immigrated to the U.S. in 1957 where I lived for 28 yrs. I came to Sayulita for the first time in 1984.

4.  Education level:In my family, education was very important (even for women)! I have a B.A. in Political Science.

5.  Family history & information?  Having a family is my greatest achievement. In 1980 I met Lalo at a Christmas party. Being married to Lalo is always exciting and a lot of fun. I have two adult sons who live abroad. My youngest son grew up in Sayulita. Thanks to the influence of this community he has become a good man, down-to-earth, uncomplicated, and conscious of the needs of others.

6. Employment/buiness history: For over 20 years we have been involved in the furniture business. I get to meet many nice families that move to this area. Lalo works closely with the artesanos. I'm always amazed at the talent and creativity of our people.

7.  One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? From the first day I set foot in Sayulita, I knew it was a different sort of place. The town was quite small and very united. The few Americans that lived here, Tia Adriana, Vicenta Sparling, Evelyne and Michael Sadlier, all were here because they truly loved Mexico and Mexicans. As the town began to grow, many came to make money, not really caring much about anything else. This I refer to as the adolescent stage of Sayulita, just plain ugly! But just in the last two years I have seen a different sort of individual coming to Sayulita. Individuals that want to make Sayulita their "home". They are concerned for the welfare of the towns people. They want to learn Spanish. They want to contribute their time and effort to keep Sayulita special.

8.  One negative change you have seen in Sayulita:  Sayulita grows and grows.....With this growth come enormous challenges. I see many people concerned with environmental issues, which of course is  valid. In my opinion we have been ignoring our most precious commodity, our children. Mexico is a country with a population of very young people (only 8% of Mexico's population is over the age of 60). Seventy percent of Mexico's budget is spent on education yet obviously it is not enough. As Sayulita grows, the urgent needs at our public schools grow.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? Time will change nothing. Sayulita will always remain the charming fishing village that we all love. Why? Because for me Sayulita is not the cobble stoned streets, the fancy houses, the new restaurants. Sayulita's charm is in its people. It will continue to be one of the few places where one is judged, not by the amount of money one has, but by one's actions.

10  Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? The people of Sayulita have a lot of work to do. We must put our house in order. We must give importance to that which is important, our families, our schools, our culture. Our entire country is facing tremendous challenges. By giving your children the best education possible, you will give them the tools they will need for life.

My wish for you is that your children will be able to resist the temptations that exist around every corner. I hope that your children will follow in the footsteps of many wonderful young Sayulitans like Yeni Verdin, Armando Pena, Rodrigo Pena, Fred Pena, Vania Rodriguez, Juan Arreola, Lupita Pena, Luis Verdin, Yesica Ramos, Jesus Cruz, Miguel Perez, Oscar Lopez, and Gabriel Gallegos, young adults that every day use their intelligence, energy, and optimism to better not only their own lives, but also the lives of those of us who surround them.

11 Other notes and/or comments:  I just want to say thank you. The happiest moments of my life have been spent in your company.
