With the support of the Punta Sayulita Team, local business, homeowners, and students spearheaded the first Sayulita Beach Cleaning Day last Saturday. The event was met with enthusiasm from the entire village of Sayulita, from elderly fisherman to young school children; and even a few visiting tourists. Punta Sayulita aims to implement this type of cleanup on a regular basis. They provided gloves and bags, as well as were successful at getting other "sponsors" involved to donate tents, water, refreshments, ATV's, trucks, and more.
Approximately one ton of trash was collected from Playa Los Muertos all the way to Playa Malpasos between Sayulita and San Pancho. A hearty "GRACIAS" to all the sponsors and participants:

Limpieza de las playas de Sayulita
Con el apoyo del Equipo de Punta Sayulita, empresas locales, de viviendas, y los estudiantes de lanza el primer Día de Limpieza de Playa Sayulita el sábado pasado. El incluso fue recibido con entusiasmo de todo el pueblo de Sayulita, pescador de ancianos a los jóvenes escolares, e incluso algunos turistas. Punta Sayulita objetivos para implementar este tipo de limpieza en una base regular. On Sunday, May 17th, in the early evening, Sayulita received the first rainfall of the season with 2.5 inches falling that night. The nights of the 19th, 20th, and 21st were followed up by 0.1 inches, 0.24 inches, and 0.15 inches respectively. This type of heavy rain has come to the area almost a month ahead of schedule. Visitors Jennifer and Greg Sleggers, from California were had on great smiles and said they were amazed at the lightning display and claimed that with the rain comes better fishing.
While navigating through fairly large puddles, local pastry vendor Anna Oliver (pictured) stated the early rains make it hard for her to sell her pastries on the beach because of the lack of sunbathers. The Sayulita riverflow has not yet reached the ocean and Anna is optimistic that this summer will only get better for the economy in Sayulita.
With the main streets on the north end of town already under construction, the early rains are causing minimal flooding on Calle Miramar. According to Municipal police officer Antonio Rodriguez, he has documented almost twice as many accidents on the local streets and highway compared to this time last year.
SayulitaLife and local authorities are urging people to be cautious while driving around semi-flooded areas and to be aware of children playing in the puddles, especially in the evenings.
Lluvias tempranas caen en Sayulita

"Whether you can give them a home for one year or 17, you're giving them a life they couldn't have dreamed of before:" Josh Labovitz.
Josh and his wife Shelly have been running Sayulita Animal Rescue for three years, but their determination to rescue homeless dogs goes back to the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005.
"We went down there (to New Orleans) and lived out of our car for a few weeks and rescued dog after dog," said Josh. "Mainly they were pit bulls that weren't neutered. That's when we, particularly Shelly, became very passionate about this."
After moving to Mexico, the work began anew. First was Capitan, a dog the couple rescued from the beach. He was tragically killed by a car, but the couple continued helping other dogs, including Nona and Jenny, who now live with them. Their third dog, Jake - an imposing but gentle Great Dane - was rescued in the US and also lives with them in Sayulita.
The pair estimates they've helped save and find homes for between 35 and 40 stray and unwanted local dogs. They are found wandering the streets searching for food, or living on the beaches off what tourists discard.
The couple says summer is the worst time for local strays, because the tourists who feed them and leave behind their garbage are gone.
"At one point this year we had 11 dogs," Josh said, adding that on the bright side, homes were found for all of them.
Animal Rescue is now affiliated with SayulitAnimals, the non-profit group that raises funds and organizes volunteers to spay and neuter dogs and cats in Sayulita, which helps control the animal population, a critical step in ensuring less unwanted animals roam the streets.
Josh and Shelly hope to work with SayulitAnimals to help them achieve three goals: the first is to set up a foster network until a shelter can be built. This involves finding families willing to take in dogs for a few days to a couple of months. "This gives us the time to find them permanent homes," Josh explained.
The second goal is to get the word out to visitors and tourists that, "it's actually very easy to take them home with you." Josh explained the local vet has all the necessary paperwork and airlines are generally very cooperative.
The third and final goal would be finding land and constructing a centrally-located animal shelter where visitors can be connected with animals needing homes.
Josh and Shelly said funds are always needed to do the work they do, and donations to SayulitAnimals are welcome.

The baseball team of Sayulita is making a run for the championship title in Banderas. The Sayulita Jaibos are currently ranked 2nd in their division and have three more games to go before the playoffs begin.
The top four teams in the division move on to the playoffs and currently the standings are #1 Los De Marcos, #2 Sayulita, #3 Higuera Blanca #4 Villa Morelos with Bucerias, San Juan de Abajo and San Jose del Valle rounding out the league.
With three games to go in the regular season the standings could change dramatically. Team Sayulita is encouraging everyone to come out on Sunday, May 31st to see their last home game before the playoffs. The games first pitch is scheduled for approximately 2pm. Keep in mind games are subject to delay or postponement due to rain or holidays.
On Sunday May 17 the #2 ranked Sayulita Jaibos Del Pacifico ended up losing in a tight showdown against the #4 ranked Villa Morelos Tecaybos. Gerardo Chacon Garcia the manager of Sayulita and Hugo Ruiz, the manager of Villa Modelo were both very enthusiastic about their teams chances in the upcoming playoffs. Judy Arce-Salazar, wife of Sayulita player Fabian Ramos told SayulitaLife that this game had been postponed earlier due to the Mother's Day holiday but that she was excited it finally was played.
All games are held at the sports field off the main street just before the bridge. They are free to the public and there are plenty of refreshments on hand for both spectators and players alike.
Beis-bol en Sayulita. Animo Jaibos!
El equipo de beis-bol de Sayulita esta jugando por el campeonato de Bahía de Banderas. Los Jaibos de Sayulita están actualmente posicionados en el 2º lugar de la división y tienen tres juegos más antes de que comiencen los cuartos de final.
Los cuatro equipos que lideran los cuartos de final y están actualmente en las siguientes posiciones: 1º Lo de Marcos, 2º Sayulita, 3º Higuera Blanca y 4º Villa Morelos, con Bucerías, San Juan de Abajo y San José del Valle dentro de la liga.
Con tres juegos más de ida de la temporada las posiciones podrían cambiar dramáticamente. El equipo de Sayulita esta alentando a todo el pueblo a venir el domingo 31 de mayo a verlos jugar el último partido en casa, antes de las semifinales. El juego se espera que comience a las 2pm aproximadamente. Recuerden que los juegos están sujetos a cambios de hora o pueden ser pospuestos debido a la lluvia o festividades.
El domingo 17 de mayo el equipo posicionado en 2º lugar, Los Jaibos del Pacifico de Sayulita, perdieron apretadamente frente al equipo en 4º Tecaibos de Villa Morelos. Gerardo Chacon García, el director del equipo de Sayulita y Hugo Ruiz, el director de Villa Morelos fueron muy entusiastas en cuanto a las posibilidades de sus respectivos equipos.
