| | Hurricane-safe in Sayulita
Hurricane season has officially started on the Pacific Coast. Storms are a reality in Sayulita, but few hurricanes cause mischief here. Two weeks ago heavy rains hit the area, the result of Tropical Storm Andres, this season's first hurricane. Packing 75 mph winds, it caused some damage along the southwestern coast of Mexico. A hurricane warning was issued south of Manzanillo to near Puerto Vallarta. Hurricane season began in May and ends Nov. 30. Locals say don't worry, be happy: there has only been one mandatory evacuation here in the last seven years; and it only lasted one night.
According to meteorologists, the Bay of Banderas acts as a natural buffer against hurricanes, directing the storms out to sea, or along the coast. Puerto Vallarta, for example, experienced damage from a hurricane just once in more than three decades. It was October 25, 2002, when Hurricane Kenna created some damage and injuries as it brushed past. The 2009 hurricane season predicts 14 named storms. Seven are expected to reach hurricane strength and three of those may be intense, with winds of 111 mph or stronger. Summer weather keeps some visitors and residents from staying here year-round. But as Ashley Lacroix (pictured) of Casa Amistad points out, there's a lot to love about the rainy season.
"It's beautiful here in the summer - an emerald forest," she said, adding she's never been afraid in the 15 years she's been coming to Sayulita. Her worst memory is being here during a storm several years ago when the electricity went out and she opened all the windows for air, only to be bitten by couple of mosquitoes.
In Sayulita each year there are on average 49 days of thunder storms, peaking in summer - June to August. June averages 187 mm of rain, 328 mm in July, 312 mm in August and 370 mm in September. However, half the days in each of these months is rain-free - generally hot and sunny and a perfect time to live and/or vacation in Sayulita.
Laura Brockman frequents Sayulita, and used to live in Playa del Carmen on the east coast of Mexico. "I was frightened for my friends in Playa del Carmen during hurricane Mitch and, more recently, Wilma," she said, adding it seems there are more hurricanes there, with a similar pattern of stormy nights and sunny days. "When it does rain in the daytime people take cover till it blows over and go about their business. What else can you do?" Brockman commented.

Temporada de huracanes ha comenzado oficialmente en la costa del Pacífico. Las tormentas son una realidad en Sayulita, pero son pocos los huracanes causan daño aquí. There are a lot of things that don't mix well with alcohol. This coming Sunday happens to be one of them. Due to elections for local/municipal representatives to the federal government, all alcohol sales will be banned this Saturday Sunday. In Mexico, absolutely ZERO alcohol sales are allowed on the day of and the evening before the election.
On Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th, the blenders come to a halt and the refrigerated alcohol section is literally locked up in every store in Mexico. For many businesses it's a normal election routine that has been in effect for many years. For some business owners/employees including Carmen Baltazar from La Cubeta market (across from the plaza) and Geraldine Castillon, the manager of Don Pedro's restaurant, a drop in business over the weekend is a very likely possibility.
El Sayulero recommends that if you plan on celebrating this weekend with any type of alcohol, be it a champagne toast for a wedding, a weekend get together or any other occasion enhanced by spirits, be sure to do your shopping before 9pm Nayarit time on Friday, July 3rd. f
Elecciones y alcohol
Hay muchas cosas que no se llevan bien con el alcohol. El domingo sucede que es una de ellas, por ser día de elecciones de diputados federales. En México, esto significa absolutamente nada de venta de alcohol el día anterior y el de la elección.
Esto es el sábado 4 y el domingo 5 de julio, que es también el fin de semana cuando los estadounidenses celebran el Día de la Independencia. En Sayulita, México estos dos días las licuadoras se paran y la sección de refrigerados esta literalmente sellada. Para muchos negocios, esto es una rutina normal que ha sido así desde hace muchos años. Para algunos negocios, incluyendo el negocio de la familia Baltazar, Mini súper La Cubeta, frente a la plaza y para Geraldine Castillón, la encargada del Restaurante Don Pedro's, esto significa un detrimento en la cantidad de clientes durante el fin de semana.
El Sayulero recomienda que si están pensando en celebrar el fin de semana con cualquier tipo de alcohol, ya sea un brindis con champaña por una boda, un fin de semana con los amigos o cualquier otra ocasión realzada con bebidas, por favor, realicen sus compras con anticipación, antes de las 9 pm del viernes 3 de julio, para todo el fin de semana.

3. Where are you originally from? I was born and raised in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Both of my parents are now deceased but they taught me many things including focus and perseverance, as well as always doing something that makes you happy. I have my son Fabio who is 13 and lives in Guadalajara, Mexico as well as my nephew Adrian who is 15 years old and lives in Washington DC, USA.

Mis padres, que ya fallecieron, me enseñaron muchas cosas, incluidas la concentración y la perseverancia así como siempre hacer algo que te haga feliz. 4. Business History? In 2005 I started a restaurant called Bagel Boy in Puerto Vallarta. At the time the pace was different. After 2 years I became tired of the hustle and bustle of Vallarta and decided to move out to the more relaxing village of Sayulita in 2007. My dream was to have a smaller but successful restaurant where the customers can feel as they are part of the experience. This is why I have my customers surrounding the chef while he prepares their burritos.

Después de 2 años me cansé del ajetreo y bullicio del Vallarta y decidí mudarme al relajante pueblo de Sayulita en 2007. Mi sueño era tener un pequeño pero exitoso restaurante donde los clientes se sintieran parte de la experiencia. Es por eso que tengo clientes alrededor del chef mientras prepara sus burritos.
5. What is the Revolution behind Burrito Revolución? That is a question I am asked all the time and it is simply a marketing concept that I came up with while creating the best burrito in town. I wanted to do something out the ordinary and focus on using only the freshest ingredients.

Eso es algo que me he preguntado a mi mismo todo el tiempo y es simplemente un concepto de mercadeo que yo mismo establecí mientras creaba el mejor burrito en el pueblo. Yo quería algo fuera de lo ordinario y me enfoque en usar solo los ingredientes mas frescos.
6. Your walls are lined with photos of past and current revolutionaries why? Since I was young I have always been a fan of revolutionaries such as Ernesto Guevara, Sub-Commandante Marcos, Emiliano Zapata and current president of the United States Barack Obama. To me the concept is doing something that is unique and benefits the people. It has nothing to do with violence or negativity, but something that simply stands out. I consider my burritos to fall into this category.

Desde que era joven siempre he sido seguidor de los revolucionarios como Ernesto Guevara, el Sub-Comandante Marcos, Emiliano Zapata y el actual presidente de los Estados Unidos, Barak Obama. Para mi, el concepto de algo es único y beneficia a la gente. No tiene nada que ver con la violencia o negatividad, si no que es algo que simplemente sobresale. Considero que mis burritos caen en esta categoría.
7. Do you feel a burrito is authentic Mexican food? The burrito is absolutely not authentic Mexican food. In fact the burrito was originally an American concept and then later introduced into Mexico. Since I have lived in Sayulita I have seen so many businesses advertising "Authentic Mexican Food" and I have yet to experience one. In fact, I haven't experienced authentic Mexican food since my grandmother Francesca passed away. My business does not try and fool anybody and we just simply prepare great burritos for anyone that wants one...or two.
7. Crees que el burrito es autentica comida Mexicana? El burrito por supuesto no es autentica comida mexicana. De hecho el burrito era originalmente un concepto americano que se introdujo mas tarde a México. Desde que vivo en Sayulita he visto tantos negocios publicitando "Autentica Comida Mexicana" y todavía no lo he experimentado. De hecho, no he experimentado la autentica comida mexicana desde que mi abuela Francisca murió. Mi negocio no trata de engañar a nadie, simplemente preparamos excelentes burritos para todos los que quieren uno... o dos.
8. What do you feel makes Burrito Revolucion successful? I feel that being honest as well as passionate are two of the main reasons for the success of Burrito Revolucion. I simply believe that honesty and giving something in return keeps my customers both satisfied and coming back for more. Whether it's the great food, service or just all around positive atmosphere. I do everything that I can to give my customers what they want.
8. Que crees tu que hace a Burrito Revolución exitoso? Creo que el ser honesto así como la pasión, son dos de las razones principales del éxito de Burrito Revolución. Yo simplemente creo que la honestidad y el dar algo a cambio, mantiene a mis clientes satisfechos y con ganas de regresar por mas. No importa si es la excelente comida, o el servicio o la atmosfera positiva que nos rodea, yo hago todo lo que puedo para dar a mis clientes lo que ellos quieren.
9. What are some things you do to promote your business here? I always try to smile, have a sense of humor and communicate with my customers. This is my main way of promoting my business. I also have recently gotten into what is called regressive marketing. This is a secret type of marketing where I find particular type of item and look for the specific hidden things I want from it.
9. Cuales son algunas de las cosas que tu negocio promueve? Siempre trato de sonreír, tener sentido del humos y de comunicarme con mis clientes. Esta es mi manera de promover mi negocio. Incluso acabo de comenzar con lo que es llamado "mercadeo regresivo". 10. How do you think next season looks for Sayulita? I keep my restaurant with a low overhead without comprising quality or experience. I feel that next year will be even stronger than the last and all businesses will start recuperating by the beginning of the high season. Nowadays I really don't see a low season except for maybe a month or two in the summer where I can catch my breath and get excited about Sayulita and Burrito Revolucion's year ahead.
10. Como crees tu que será la próxima temporada para Sayulita? Yo mantengo mi restaurante con gastos mínimos sin mermar la experiencia. Creo que la próxima temporada será más fuerte que la pasada y que los negocios empezaran a recuperarse en el inicio de la temporada. En estos días realmente no veo una temporada baja, excepto talvez por uno o dos meses durante el verano, y allí es cuando puedo descansar y empezar a emocionarme por la próxima temporada en Sayulita y en Burrito Revolución.
