Pro Sayulita open general meeting

Sayulita business owners, homeowners, and residents gathered at Latitude 20 for a Pro Sayulita Open General Meeting on 2/22.

President of Pro Sayulita, Jack Jones, opened the meeting by welcoming all 50+ people who attended and thanked the hosts at Latitude 20 for their hospitality.  

Board members present at the meeting were Jack Jones, Janet Moeller, Charlie Knittel, Billie Taylor, Cap Sparliing, and Carol Ashwell.  

A letter was distributed titled, “Wastewater and Infrastructure Fund”. Jack Jones explained the details and the four main points of the project. Below are the following main points. 

Sayulita Wastewater and Infrastructure Project

  1. Completion of the Calle Gaviotas project to stop black water from flowing down Calle Manuel Navarette and into the river
  2. Completion of a formal engineering study of the amounts and limits of the aquafiers currently serving Sayulita, and their capacity to meet population growth
  3. Continuation of street and drainage cleaning throughout the town
  4. Development of a system to collect recyclables in order to reduce trash

Jack Jones explained that they have been working with allies such as Conagua and the Tourist Bureau for the present infrastructure issues. It was stressed that generous donations are needed from residents, homeowners and business owners to help 

Making Donations to the Wastewater and Infrastructure Project

Pro Sayulita open general meeting at latitude 20Charlie Knittel, the ProSayulita treasurer, explained how to donate to the Infrastructure Fund. It is possible to send a donation check to the bank. Eric Rudd explained why the bank is in North Adams, Mass. Donations to the Infrastructure Fund will be deposited into this bank account and the money raised and deposited there will only be used for infrastructure projects.  

A separate account has been set up for the Wastewater/ Gaviotas project. Pro Sayulita asks that donors come forward to contribute generously in USD by wire transfer or mail-in check. To ensure your donations go directly to this specific project, Pro Sayulita kindly asks all questions for proper donation procedures be directed to email friendsofsayulita@gmail.com.

Sayulita Infrastructure Committee

Lina Weissman of Eco Sayulita discussed the needs of the town and the desire to form an Infrastructure Committee that reflects a diverse group (local businesses, Profepa, Commerciantes, vigilantes, etc.) to work together on the infrastructure projects of the town and to meet regularly to create sustainable solutions. This committee will be given technical information and financial updates. The Infrastructure committee will be chaired by Lina Weissman and will be working with Pro Sayulita.

Eco Sayulita is also working extremely hard to improve the Recycle Depot with support from Pro Sayulita. Equipment for this large project is greatly needed. They are asking for donations of the following:

  • Rakes
  • Shovels
  • Exterior paint and brushes
  • String
  • Fire extinguishers

Fact-Checked Local Sayulita Information

Ian Hodge of Sayulita Life spoke about working on a system that will get information out in English and Spanish to people in Sayulita that are residents, homeowners and business owners. There will be a committee of 5 highly vetted people who oversee what information will be posted and will do thorough fact-checking to prevent misinformation. This email group is called Lista Sayulita. Ian is also helping Pro Sayulita update their website to reflect a non-profit platform with information that is readily available to all.

Janet Moeller talked about the upcoming Pro Sayulita fundraisers:

Gala Dinner and Live Auction 
March 7th, Don Pedro's Upstairs 
A pairing dinner will be offered. This event is now currently sold out.

The ProSayulita Annual General Meeting
March 16th, Location/ Time TBD 
At this meeting, there will be a financial statement from 2016, a proposed budget for 2017 and a slate of directors. Voting members must be Pro Sayulita members and pay $500 pesos at the meeting.

The Pro Sayulita Fiesta for 2017
March 29th, at Don Pedro’s Palapa
Posters and tickets will be out by the beginning of March.  Tickets will be available at the Farmers’ Market, La Hamaca, and Don Pedro’s Restaurant. There will be a Live Auction and also a small Silent Auction. Pro Sayulita members are asking painters to donate a canvas wall hanging to be auctioned off at the silent auction. Canvas and the acrylic paint will be provided to anyone interested.  Please contact Carol Ashwell if you would like to participate.

The next Pro Sayulita meeting will be held in March. Date is to be determined.
