Sayulita’s Beloved Turtle Camp is Back — Find them at the End of North Beach!
Sayulita’s cherished Turtle Camp is back in action — located at the end of Sayulita’s north beach, they reopen with the same dedicated mission, and plenty of ways for locals and visitors to get involved.
🌊 Who We Are
Sayulita Turtle Camp is run entirely by unpaid volunteers passionate about protecting our local sea turtles. Founded in 2007 by marine biologist Alejandra Aguirre, the organization became part of Red Tortuguera A.C. in 2012, giving them the official support needed to expand their conservation efforts.
Their team leads patrols on Sayulita and Malpasos beaches day and night, rescues vulnerable nests, conducts important research on turtle populations, and runs educational programs — especially for local kids.
🐢 Why Are Sea Turtles So Important?
Sea turtles are vital to the health of marine ecosystems. They help keep algae populations in check, which in turn protects coral reefs and maintains ocean balance. Without them, the entire marine landscape would change dramatically.
Sadly, habitat destruction and poaching have put Olive Ridley sea turtles on the endangered species list. That’s why Sayulita Turtle Camp’s work is so critical.

🏝️ When & How We Protect Turtles
- Nesting season runs June through December, with patrols from 10 PM to 7 AM.
- Hatchlings born in the camp’s nursery are released at sunset the very same day.
- Educational activities and conservation programs happen year-round.
💚 How You Can Help
Want to be part of this incredible mission? Here’s how:
✅ Volunteer: Join a nest collection patrol at night or early morning and experience the magic firsthand.
✅ Donate: Every peso helps save more nests and release more hatchlings into the sea.
✅ Adopt a Nest: For $1,000 pesos, you can adopt a turtle nest — you’ll even get photos and videos of your nest’s hatchlings heading out to sea.
✅ Shop for the Cause: Visit their table at the Friday market or evening releases to pick up turtle-friendly products that support the program.
