Sayulita Life Supports Azul Sayu & Trashion Fashion with $5,000 Peso Donation!
Each month, Sayulita Life proudly donates to a local project or organization that’s making a real difference here in Sayulita.
For May, we’re excited to spotlight Azul Sayu – the incredible team behind our local recycling program – and support their amazing event, Trashion Fashion!
At Sayulita Life, we believe that caring for our community means caring for our environment, too!
Meet Azul Sayu

Azul Sayu is a registered not-for-profit organization (Asociación Civil) in the state of Nayarit.
They run our local recycling program, managing nearly 200 recycle bins across Sayulita and San Ignacio!
Thanks to Azul Sayu’s efforts, local restaurants, bars, homes, developments, schools, and parks have been able to significantly reduce trash in our communities.
They’re also proud partners of Pro Sayulita, and together, they recently celebrated the completion of Operation Trash Phase 1 – a major step toward a cleaner, greener Sayulita.
Beyond recycling, Azul Sayu organizes monthly beach cleanups, supports all local surf events with cleanup efforts, and leads community education programs to inspire a culture of environmental responsibility.
Fun Fact: Unlike many places around the world, Mexico still leads in recycling by keeping it local! Your glass bottles are turned into new glasses in Mexico City, and your plastic bottles are transformed into carpets or tires in Guadalajara.
Why We’re Supporting Azul Sayu This Month

On May 7th, Azul Sayu will host the 6th Annual Trashion Fashion Event at Rancho Poco a Poco.
Trashion Fashion is more than just a fun runway show – it’s a beautiful celebration of Sayulita’s creativity, community spirit, and commitment to keeping our streets, jungle, and ocean clean and healthy.
This year, 28 local models will strut the runway wearing stunning designs made from found objects and what others might see as “trash”, all crafted by talented local artists.
All proceeds from Trashion Fashion – including our donation – will directly support Azul Sayu’s critical services like recycling, community cleanups, and educational programs.
How Our Donation Helps

Azul Sayu operates with no government funding and relies entirely on donations and community support.
Their program costs about $40,000 pesos ($2,043 USD/$2,828 CAD) per month, covering:
- Salaries for two employees
- Rent for the sorting and storage facility (The Acopio)
- Payments to recycle materials like glass and cardboard
- Gas and vehicle maintenance
- Taxes and accounting fees
Private pick-up service fees cover only about 25% of their operating costs – the rest is made possible through the generosity of people like you!
With our support (and yours!), Azul Sayu can continue offering free recycling services to the community and running beach cleanups.
It’s up to all of us to ensure that Sayulita remains a beautiful, thriving place for everyone!
