Sayulita Life’s October Donation: Bringing Technology to Sayulita’s Primary School
Each month, Sayulita Life donates $5,000 MXN to a local cause. This October, we’re supporting a project to bring reliable Internet—and, soon, a computer lab—to Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona. We sat down with Kenneth King, the community volunteer leading the effort. The story below is in Kenneth’s own words.
The Challenge: Classrooms Without Internet
Earlier this year, I read a SayulitaLife.com newsletter about our town’s primary school struggling with Internet access. Wanting to give back, especially to projects that help kids, I reached out to the school director, Francisco. He spoke excellent English and explained the core issue:
- The office has a fast Telmex connection,
- …but the signal doesn’t reach the classrooms.
- Teachers often teach without Internet, or tether to slow phone hotspots.
A quick site visit showed why: sun-damaged outdoor cabling and failed Wi-Fi devices.
A Quick Fix—And a Plan
With just a few days before returning to the U.S., I installed a temporary bridge using older Wi-Fi units and long cables. The result: classrooms jumped from < 1 Mbps to 100+ Mbps.
I promised to return with a permanent solution. The service is strong; it simply needs proper distribution across campus.
The Permanent Upgrade Will Include:
- New main network switch in the office
- Weather-protected cabling in conduit (to replace failing outdoor runs)
- 3–4 professional, centrally managed Wi-Fi access points
The school already has Wi-Fi–enabled projectors; a proper network means teachers can finally use them effectively.
October Donation: What It Covers
Thanks to Sayulita Life’s $5,000 MXN donation, we plan to purchase the new switch in November 2025.
Additional funds are still needed for:
- Conduit + new cabling
- Professional access points
I’ll donate all installation and programming—we’re simply asking the community to help with equipment costs.
Phase Two (Early 2026): A Sayulita Computer Lab
Right now, Sayulita’s kids must travel to San Pancho to use a computer lab. Our goal for early 2026 is to set up a 5–10 computer lab right here in town, in collaboration with the school and community.
About Kenneth
I’m Kenneth King. I worked 35 years in the U.S. as a computer engineer, specializing in Internet solutions for businesses and large properties. Over the past five years, my partner and I have made Sayulita our home, and now I want to use my skills to support projects that benefit our community—especially those that give children access to the technology they need to succeed.
How You Can Help
- Donate toward equipment (APs, conduit, cabling).
- Contribute gear (new/like-new business-grade access points or CAT6 cable).
- Spread the word to friends and neighbors.
To contribute: reply to this Sayulero or contact Sayulita Life and mention “Primary School Internet Project.”
With your help, we can bring better Internet, better resources, and bigger smiles to Sayulita’s classrooms.
