🇲🇽 Viva México! Celebrating Independence Day in Sayulita
Every year on September 16th, Mexico celebrates its Independence Day — and here in Sayulita, the celebrations are as vibrant as the town itself. While some people mistakenly think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s independence celebration, the true holiday commemorates “El Grito de Dolores” of 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo called for the fight for freedom from Spanish rule.
How Sayulita Celebrates
In Sayulita, the festivities begin on the night of September 15th, when the town gathers in the plaza for food, music, and dancing. You’ll hear mariachi, banda, and local musicians filling the streets, while vendors serve up tacos, pozole, elotes, aguas frescas, and of course, tequila and cerveza to toast “¡Viva México!”
The official Grito is called out around midnight, followed by fireworks lighting up the Sayulita sky. It’s a beautiful, goosebumps moment that unites locals and visitors alike.
Then on the morning of September 16th, Sayulita comes alive again with a big parade through town — complete with music, all the local schoolchildren, folkloric dancers, and even dancing horses. It’s a colorful, lively celebration of culture and tradition that fills every corner of town with energy.
A Celebration for Everyone
Whether you’re a visitor or a longtime Sayulita local, Independence Day is one of the best times to experience true Mexican culture. It’s not just a holiday — it’s a reminder of resilience, unity, and joy.
So grab a Mexican flag, enjoy a plate of pozole, and join Sayulita as we celebrate Viva México, Viva Sayulita! 🎉🌮🎆
