From Trash to Runway: Trashion Fashion 2026 Returns to Sayulita May 7th
A Fundraiser for Azul Sayu, A.C.
On May 7th, Sayulita came together at Rancho Poco a Poco for the 7th Annual Trashion Fashion event — and what an unforgettable night it was. As high season winds down and our town settles into the slower rhythms of summer, this year’s gathering was a beautiful reminder of what really makes Sayulita special: the people quietly working behind the scenes to keep our streets, beaches, and jungle as beautiful as the day we first fell in love with them. Trashion Fashion is exactly that — creativity meeting conservation, neighbors meeting purpose, and proof that what some see as trash, our community sees as opportunity.
A Runway Made From Recycled Magic
This year, 33 models walked the runway in designs crafted entirely from found objects and what others might consider trash — all dreamed up by local artists. From elaborate florals made of repurposed plastics to gowns assembled from upcycled fabrics and packaging, the evening showcased imagination in its most joyful form. Trashion Fashion was created by Flora Amor as a community educational event to inspire us to reduce and reuse — and to keep doing our best to protect our streets, jungle, and ocean. Every look on the runway told a story, and the energy from the crowd made it clear: Sayulita understands that creativity and conservation are inseparable.

Where the Proceeds Go: Azul Sayu, A.C.
All proceeds and donations from Trashion Fashion go directly to Azul Sayu, A.C. — an Asociación Civil (legally registered not-for-profit) in the state of Nayarit that manages our local recycling program. Azul Sayu now has close to 200 recycle bins across Sayulita and San Ignacio, working with restaurants, bars, homes, developments, schools, and parks to significantly reduce trash in our communities. The program also organizes monthly beach clean-ups, clean-ups during all surf events, and helps maintain streets throughout town.
Azul Sayu receives no government funding, and every contribution makes a real difference. If you’re in the US, donations made online are tax-deductible for filers who itemize. Keep this vital program going:

Did You Know?
While the local government provides trash services to our county — Bahía de Banderas — no recycling services are provided or funded. The current Azul Sayu budget is approximately $45,000 pesos per month and operates 6 days a week. Costs include salaries for two employees, rent for the sorting and storage facility (called the acopio), payments to recycle glass and cardboard, gas, vehicle maintenance, materials, taxes, and accounting fees. The program runs with remarkable efficiency: recycling services are free to the community, with about 25% of the budget covered by nominal fees for private pick-up service and the remaining 75% by donations from generous community members and business sponsors.
Mexico’s Smart Approach to Recycling
While many countries have given up on recycling due to cost and effort, Mexico is still in the game. Part of the reason is a smart choice: Mexico only recycles items that can be processed locally, which keeps costs down and impact up. That empty wine bottle? It heads to a factory in Mexico City to be ground down and formed into new glassware. That plastic Coke bottle? It travels to Guadalajara to be shredded, melted, and reformed into carpets or tires.
How the Local Program Works
In Sayulita and San Ignacio, Azul Sayu is able to recycle glass, metal, PET plastics, and cardboard. Recycling is a clean process, so items need to be rinsed and separated from trash to be recyclable. For example, cardboard is shredded during recycling, so it cannot be wet or stained with oil (that greasy pizza box, unfortunately, doesn’t make the cut).
Keep the Momentum Going
Trashion Fashion may be over for the year, but Azul Sayu’s work continues every single day. Let’s all do our part to reduce trash in Sayulita by educating our children, diverting recyclables from trash piles to recycling bins, and supporting Azul Sayu as they provide these valuable community services. Make your contribution today.
