On Thursday night, the federal health ministry reported 3,377 new Covid-19 cases, increasing the total number of accumulated cases to 81,400. There are 16,315 active cases. The official death toll reached 9,044 while an additional 783 fatalities are suspected of having been caused by Covid-19 said Hugo Lopez-Gatell. He also stated that 254,794 people have been tested and there are 36,131 suspected cases across Mexico. Mexico's low testing rate means that the case tally only represents a fraction of the pandemic in Mexico.
Only three states have less than 100 active cases - Colima, Zacatecas and Baja California Sur.
Based on confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths, Mexico's fatality rate is currently 11.1 which is much higher than the global rate of 6.2.
The federal government's national social distancing initiative will end on Saturday, just over two months since it began. However, the risk of infection remains very high. Every state in the country other than Zacatecas is currently considered to be at the maximum risk of infections. Zacatecas will be the only state permitted to ease restrictions on Monday. UNAM has warned that the infection rate is far from being under control.
The situation in Mexico is comparable to that in the United States, Brazil and Russia, which have the highest number of Coronavirus cases in the world. It is recommended that Mexico implement stricter measures to slow the growth of cases.
