Yambak. Most of us here in Sayulita instantly know the name and place, with its iconic location on the corner of the plaza; we’ve all seen locals and tourists alike having fun, enjoying great music, and dancing in the street at the corner of Yambak. Most notorious for its DJ nights with electronic music, Yambak has recently branched out to now offer an extensive beer and delicious food menu, with daily specials of poke bowls, cocktails, and in-house crafted beers. Arturo of Yambak tells me more about the history of the bar and restaurant, as well as some of the new things guests will find when they visit Yambak.

Art has the unique ability to transcend us into alternate realities and spaces; it can tell stories, remind us of our past or of loved ones, and can open our eyes and inspire us to see something we’ve never thought or dreamed of before. In essence, art creates a shared connection. In Sayulita, we are lucky to have a thriving community of diverse artists, and our beautiful, colorful pueblo magico truly reflects this sentiment, as it is normal to see bright, vivid paintings all over town. Antonio Hernandez is a local muralist, whose stunning work you’ve probably already seen on Sayulita’s walls and buildings. I speak with Antonio, and he tells me about himself and his passion for painting murals in Sayulita.

Tranco’s Carniceria in Sayulita recently got a remodel, and along with that, an upgrade to the types of specialty items they carry in their store. Being a local family-run and family-owned business, Tranco’s Carniceria takes great care in the products they carry, as well as the service they provide to our community. I can say from my own personal experience shopping at Tranco’s, that it is clear that they take pride in the relationships they have with their customers. Every time I enter the store, I am greeted by name. It is not often that a business takes that much personal interest in their clients, and it definitely feels special. I talked with one of the owners, Lourdes, about what’s new in the store, and what customers can expect with the recent remodel.

This month’s recipient of the Sayulita Life $5,000 donation is the Mar y Vida camp, run and organized by the local organization El Centro Creativo. The Mar y Vida camp is a five day camp for local youth, to be held on July 1st, 2019, through July 5th. The camp includes five days of fun, exploratory and learning based activities, such as art, surfing, and science experiments. I spoke with Risa Machuca, one of the leaders of the camp, about the Mar y Vida experience, and how Sayulita Life’s donation will help impact and benefit the camp and the local youth attending.

Taking a trip to Mexico was on my list of things I wanted to do and one of the top places I wanted to visit. Recently, I was inspired by someone who was at one time a big part of my life; her experiences in seeing the world on her own was, as she described, something of an eye opener where she discovered not only foreign places, but found out new things about herself. This is what led me to discover the must-visit town of Sayulita.

To celebrate Sayulita Life's 15th year in Sayulita, Sayulita Life began the “Giving Fund” campaign, honoring our value of giving back to the community by pledging to give a donation every month to a different local charity, fundraiser, organization, or cause in Sayulita. The first recipient of this donation was granted on Thursday, May 29th, 2019, toward the Dia De Los Muertos Festival of 2019. This donation will go directly toward the purchase of over 30 kilos of yarn and materials to support the efforts of Sayulita’s goal to create at least 12,000 “Ojos de Dios”, or “Eyes of God” for this year’s Dia De Los Muertos festival.

Alex and I, (Judy), live in a small village in Central Northern British Columbia, called Vanderhoof. Some years ago, I was looking for a yoga retreat and stumbled across the town of Sayulita. When I googled more about Sayulita, it seemed like a great place to go and visit. I decided instead of going on a retreat, I would invite my husband along and just take a few yoga classes, as Sayulita offered so many options with affordable drop-in rates. The more affordable prices meant we could afford to have my husband and brother come along. For our first visit, we stayed at Los Corales suites. It was a great space with amazing hosts. We enjoyed fishing, surfing, yoga, and of course the many restaurants, including the Mama Mia Pizza (which is no longer around). Because of how much we loved Sayulita after that first trip, the following year we loaded up our family and rented a house (Casa Suenos). With our 5 daughters, spouses and our first grand-child, we all enjoyed 10 wonderful days together experiencing Sayulita’s magic of beach massages, beaches, and making fun memories with our family.
