Have you ever looked at a label of an item at a grocery store and read the list of ingredients? How surprised were you by all of the names that you did not recognize? All too often, we see ingredients in our food that sound like something you’d use in a chemistry lab experiment. These same foods with ingredients we can’t even pronounce sometimes end up on menus in restaurants. However, at Veggie Land, one of Sayulita’s newest restaurants which opened in 2017, you can be assured that all of the ingredients used in their menu are natural, real, and fresh. At Veggie Land, they use simply wholesome, healthy, and raw ingredients combined with local produce to create healthy dining options for our community of Sayuilta.

The Sayulita Recycle Bin Pickup Program currently now has a total of 23 recycle bins located throughout town, including several on Niños Heroes Street, Gabriel Rodriguez (near the top of the road), and around the plaza/ near the main break beach. Before these recycle bins were put in place, a lot of people didn’t know how to separate glass from plastic, or they had no way of getting their recycling to the Recycle Center, because the new location is one mile outside of Sayulita’s centro. As a result, a lot of recyclable items (like glass or plastic) ended up in the trash, or even worse, on the streets and on our beaches. Now, each recycle station includes a plastic recycle bin and a glass recycle bin. In addition to building and placing the bins around town, the Sayulita Recycle Bin Pickup Program manages the pick-up of the recycling and the transferring of it to the new Recycle Center. This is truly an incredible and successful step forward for our little pueblo of Sayulita.

Many of you may remember when I started my journey last year at the beginning of the school year at Primaria Damian Carmona in Sayulita. With your help and donations we have accomplished many things; 70 new desks were purchased, the lunch area roof was repaired, a wash area was constructed, plastic dishes were purchased, disposables were eliminated, flood lights were purchased and installed, the exterior wall was beautifully painted, small plumbing and electrical repairs were made, rubber mats for the bathrooms were added, 2 AC mini split units were donated, and the latest fundraiser will be used to repaint the entrance archway and fix one of the PE areas.

The 9th Annual Auxiliary Lifeguard Training was held on March 13th and 14th. It was a HUGE success! The class consisted of 43 men and women aged 11-40. It is estimated that over 200 people have now been trained in the Bahia Banderas. Instructors from the municipal Lifeguard Program trained participants in water rescue skills, CPR, spinal management, both in and out of the water, and endurance. The weather was perfect both days, with just enough wave action to make some of the workshops challenging.

A dedication ceremony for the new Sayulita Lifeguard Tower was held on Monday Feb. 26th, the 5th anniversary of Mark Stoneberg's drowning. Mark’s wife, Nancy, and 19 family members and friends from Minnesota were in attendance. Approximately 50 people from our pueblo were in attendance, as well as Brian Singleton of Firefighters Crossing Borders and Citlali Darany López Souza, the new Director of Proteccion Civil. Jack Jones, president of Pro Sayulita, opened the ceremony welcoming all attendees. Janice Parker, Pro Sayulita’s Beach Safety Program Coordinator, introduced Brian and Darany, who then spoke to us regarding the commitment of the government to our Beach Safety Program. As partners in this program with Proteccion Civil, Bahia Banderas, and Firefighters Crossing Borders, Pro Sayulita has agreed to fund and build three more towers. A special thanks was given to Cyd Viator of Phoenix AZ. He designed and built the tower himself, using 100% recycled plastic. Written by: Janice Parker
