Sayulita’s Junior Surf and Sup Teams are heading to Colima, Manzanillo, on May 25th, 2019, through May 31st, to compete for the first time in the Mexican National Olympic games. After two weeks of training, the youth are ready to compete against the best, although many of them have been surfing or paddle boarding for their whole lives in preparation. This is the first time in history that the Nayarit state team has been represented at the Mexican National Olympic games, due to the requirement that the team members must also be enrolled in school, and also because this is the first time that surfing has been acknowledged as a federal sport by the government of Nayarit. I talk with the team coach, Geovani Perez, about the team and the excitement over this competition.

Vallarta Lifestyles Restaurant Week is a two week food festival in Puerto Vallarta, as well as the greater Nayarit area. The festival takes place each year from May 15th to June 10th. During these two weeks, participating restaurants offer their guests special innovative three-course menus to delight anyone seeking to explore our destination’s outstanding cuisine at a reduced price. Typically, most restaurants that participate in this festival are located in Puerto Vallarta, however this year, local restaurant Bistro Organico in San Pancho will also be participating. I speak with Gisela Marin from Bistro Organico about their involvement in this year’s festival.

Back in February of 2008, in deeply cold and snowy Canada, my partner and I decided we needed a good place to get away to warm up. Barra de Navidad in Mexico was our first destination of choice, having known many people from years past who had enjoyed the sun and laid-back attitude there. But alas, we had left too late, and by the time we arrived, crash crowds had filled up the town. Another friend of ours then suggested we try a different west-coast Mexican town, Sayulita, telling us that it had a similar vibe to what we were looking for. Well, the rest is history. Ever since then, I can say I am now thoroughly and happily a part of the community of Sayulita, with all of its vicissitudes. And I am staying!

I found the MOST DELICIOUS recipe for Mexican Chorizo Meatball Sandwiches last week! After all, we live in Sayulita, so let’s cook with some Mexican style flavors! If you eat meat, I believe that you will really enjoy this recipe. Served in a fresh baked bolillo (baguette) with homemade mayonnaise and chipotle peppers, it makes your mouth water just thinking about it!

Can you explain to readers what the “Wellness Fest” event is? The Wellness Fest is a two day health and wellness event here in Sayulita, which will be held at Nirvanna Spa on Friday, May 3rd, 2019, through Saturday, May 4th, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This event is for anyone looking for multidisciplinary treatments of different health related aspects addressed to personal care. Myself (Dr. Barbara Nester) & Nirvanna Spa both aim to provide the best services with the best prices for our entire community of Sayulita, as well as, of course, for our friends who visit each year, or even first-timers. We will also be providing courses, free yoga aid, and various specials on treatments for aesthetic medicine, nutrition, and spa services. For this festival, we are promoting to the community our new menu of facials for all skin types and skin concerns, with our new professional line called “Repechage”. Also, of course the rest of our normal services for wellness will be included, such as our signature massages, body scrubs, body masks, manicures, pedicures, cupping massages, and heat therapy with the "Soqui bed".

Have you ever heard the expression “Everything but the kitchen sink”? If not, it’s an expression that implies that you use any and everything you have available in your kitchen (besides the sink, of course) to create a meal. This means anything and everything goes in terms of what ingredients you use! I have heard the expression used before for cookies, but today I wanted to call this column “Everything But The Kitchen Sink Frittata! As long as you have eggs and cheese in your fridge, the sky's the limit as to what you can use to make this very yummy breakfast frittata. It is easy to make in your Sayulita kitchen, and delicious!

I first discovered Sayulita about 25 years ago. I was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and I have been coming to Sayulita all of my life. Back then, it wasn’t as popular as it is now, but it was and is still just as beautiful. My brother and I both love surfing, and we had been told that Sayulita had a great beach and excellent waves for surfers, so we decided to check it out. That is how we made our first trip to Sayulita and discovered its magic. Now I live in California and I visit Sayulita twice a year. I have traveled all around the area, from Vallarta to Compostela. I also camped with my family in Chacala, as well as visited Guayabitos, Las Peñita, and San Pancho. However, nothing can compare to Sayulita! I always look forward to my trips; there’s no way I would ever change my vacation to go somewhere else except Sayulita!

On Thursday, April 11th, 2019, the emissor pipe was successfully installed to the newly upgraded wastewater treatment plant in Sayulita. The Gobernador Antonio Echevarria Garcia, the Presidente Municipal de Bahia de Banderas, Jaime Cuevas, and the director of the CEA (Nayarit’s potable water authority), Martha Patricia Urenda Delgado were at the treatment plant yesterday, on April 16th, to tour and inaugurate the newly upgraded and fully functioning plant and emissor. Sayulita is now the only beach town in the area that does not dump grey water directly onto the beach. Many people turned out today to tour the plant and grounds, and it was great to see everyone involved in the process. There was also a noticeable lack of odor at the plant, which was a pleasant experience. The government of Nayarit also tested the water quality and the latest test results showed between 10 and 20 NMP / 100 ml enterococci, which is well below the 200 NMP / 100 ml limit set by the government for safe swimming.
