Colegio Costa Verde is a private, international school here in Sayulita. It is having its annual fundraiser with the theme of “Havana Nights” in order to raise funds for the school’s scholarship program. Parent and lead organizer Niki Bhattacharya tells me more about the school and the importance of this fundraiser for our local children of Sayulita.

Warm, fashionable, and with a certain bohemian flair, that is jewelry designer Tara Nish. When I visit her in her beautifully unique store Astrid Lily here in Sayulita, she takes a break from handcrafting her one-of-a-kind pieces to talk about her personal experiences and what she has discovered along the way in the jewelry making business.

Do you ever wonder where your donations to Pro Sayulita end up? Well, here is one of the many projects underway at the moment that your dollars and pesos are supporting. Cyd Viator, our Lifeguard Tower designer and builder, has been working tirelessly since he arrived here on December 1st 2018. Cyd has selflessly volunteered his time to us and has been working solo on this project. He is currently building the last three lifeguard towers for the project at El Centro Creativo Sayulita, working seven hours a day, six days a week!

Arriba la mujer. This seems to be the signature phrase for Sayulita’s newest all female environmental action group, “Movimiento de la Mujer por el Medio Ambiente”. The group was created on Facebook by founding member and long-time Sayulita resident Tracie Willis. Because Tracie has lived in Sayulita for 29 years, she has easily seen the way the pueblo has changed and the way the environment has negatively been impacted. Tracie says, “I’ve been waiting many years for this generation of local women to come of age…this is a big movement, the first of its kind.” So what exactly is this group’s purpose and mission?

Chili Relleno is one of my most favorite Mexican dishes, and they are so easy to make here in Sayulita, as the poblano peppers are available at almost every tienda in town. The traditional chili relleno is a stuffed pepper that is breaded, deep fried, and smothered in a red sauce. My friend Susana was here last week, and she introduced me to her version; it is a deconstructed chili relleno with a lovely soufflé topping and a delicious homemade salsa verde. I just knew that I had to share this recipe with you today!

For many, the New Year is a holiday centered around self-reflection of the year that has passed, and thinking ahead to the new year to come. For many people, setting goals for the new year is a common practice, whether they be personal goals for self-improvement, health, and growth, or goals for improving/fostering relationships with family, friends, loved ones, or even academic or work related goals. For some, the new year is also about letting go of the past--- past mistakes, hurt, losses, or failures, and moving forward in pursuit of success and happiness. In Mexican culture here in Sayulita, our community is full of traditions and rituals believed to help move us into the New Year of 2019 with good luck and fortune.

I LOVE COOKIES: peanut butter, shortbread, chocolate chip, etc.; there are so many possibilities! Today I want to share with you the most delicious cookie recipe: PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS. All of the ingredients for these cookies are available here in Sayulita, perhaps with the exception of the Chocolate Kisses, which you can always find at Mega. I can just visualize you sitting on your Sayulita patio enjoying these cookies as an afternoon delight with a glass of very chilled Prosecco or an ice cold glass of milk!

Munching and snacking my way around Sayulita, I stumbled upon El Atazcon Restaurant. While I only planned for a quick bite with the family, I ended up chatting and dining my way well into the evening, while filling four little tummies. When it was time to leave, the whole family was smiling from ear to ear. Needless to say, we have been returning again, again, and again. El Atazcon Restaurant is sure to become your new favorite spot for traditional Mexican cuisine in Sayulita.
